CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Leemire Goldwire scored 24 points and Charlotte scored 20 straight points during a 71-56 rout of Southern Illinois on Saturday night.
Charlotte (6-2) shot 47 percent from 3-point range, held Southern Illinois to 32 percent shooting and allowed them to make just 6 of their 26 attempts from beyond the arc.
Lamont Mack had 14 points and An’Juan Wilderness added 12 for the 49ers, who won their third straight.
Matt Shaw scored 20 points and Joshua Bone added 13 for the Salukis (3-3), who have lost three straight.
Ian Andersen finished with 12 points—and 11 of those came during the decisive 20-0 first-half spurt, which started when Wilderness hit a free throw to pull the 49ers within 9-5. Andersen hit three 3s during the run, which lasted about 10 minutes and was capped by Andersen’s 3 that made it 24-9.
The 49ers led 32-20 at halftime, and opened the second half with a 7-0 burst. Once Charlotte’s lead reached 23 in the second half, the Salukis didn’t get closer than 13 after that.
Southern Illinois did not attempt a free throw in the first half and finished 10 of 17 from the line.
