IPFW outshoots Thunderbirds at charity stripe and 3-point range

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP)—Demetrius Johnson had 14 points and 10 assists and Jaraun Burrows scored 18 points as IPFW beat Southern Utah 74-66 Thursday night in the Summit League opener for both teams.

DeWitt Scott had 17 and Jakari Johnson 12 for IPFW (3-4, 1-0), which never trailed.

The Thunderbirds shot 27-of-51 from the field compared with IPFW’s 23-of-54, but the Mastodons mastered them at the free-throw line, going 19-of-26 while Southern Utah (1-7, 0-1) managed just 6-of-13.

IPFW also outshot the Thunderbirds from behind the arc, going 9-of-23 while Southern Utah shot 6-of-16.

Geoff Payne led Southern Utah with 27 points and Davis Baker had 20. Dave Marek had 10 assists for the Thunderbirds, who trailed 34-25 at halftime.
