Jarvis scores 23 to lead Oral Roberts past Tulsa 84-70
TULSA, Okla. (AP)—Robert Jarvis scored 23 points and his three-point shooting sparked a comeback from an early 11-point deficit as Oral Roberts defeated crosstown rival Tulsa 84-70 on Tuesday.
Jarvis, a 5-foot-11 junior guard, went 8-of-15 from the field, including 5-of-10 on 3-pointers, for Oral Roberts (6-2), which won the Mayor’s Cup for the fourth time in five years.
Marcus Lewis and Adam Liberty each scored 15 points in the second half to help the Golden Eagles hold off visiting Tulsa (2-2). Lewis was 10-of-15 from the field as he finished with 21 points and eight rebounds. Liberty went 10-of-11 on free throws and had 18 points and five assists.
Ben Uzoh scored 14 of his team-high 20 points in the second half for the Golden Hurricane, and Jerome Jordan added 15 points for Tulsa.
Oral Roberts trailed 19-8 early but used a 19-1 run to seize control. Behind four 3-pointers from Jarvis, the Golden Eagles led 38-27 at halftime. Tulsa never got any closer as Lewis scored four baskets in the first six minutes of the second half.
The Eagles’ lead grew to 69-50 before Tulsa went on a 10-2 run to cut its deficit to 71-59 with 4:18 left. Liberty and Lewis combined for all of Oral Roberts’ points in an ensuing 9-3 spurt that sealed the win for the Golden Eagles.
Tulsa’s leading scorer, Glenn Andrews, suffered an apparent knee injury and did not return to the game after the first four minutes. Another Tulsa freshman, Justin Hurtt, went 4-of-4 from the field and scored 10 points before sustaining a left shoulder injury with 7:17 left. He also did not return.
Oral Roberts shot 53 percent (30 of 57) from the field, the first time in 63 games under coach Doug Wojcik that Tulsa has allowed an opponent to shoot 50 percent or better.
