Freshman Justin Burrell has 15 points, 14 rebounds and St. John’s beats Fairleigh Dickinson
NEW YORK (AP)—D.J. Kennedy scored 18 points and fellow freshman forward Justin Burrell had 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead St. John’s to a 92-67 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday night.
Senior point guard Eugene Lawrence had 20 points and nine assists and Larry Wright had all of his 18 points on 3-pointers for the Red Storm (3-0), who improved to 11-0 all-time against FDU.
Sean Baptiste had 19 points for the Knights (1-4), who led 45-42 at halftime after going 8-for-13 from 3-point range.
St. John’s extended and tightened its defense in the second half to take control.
It was during a 15-2 run that the Red Storm took the lead for good at 53-51 on a rebound basket by Paris Horne with 16:25 to play.
After Manny Ubilla hit a 3—one of two the Knights managed in 11 attempts in the second half—St. John’s scored 10 straight points to close an 11-2 run that made it 73-58 with 8:24 to play.
The Red Storm led by as many as 27 points.
Kennedy, who is starting in place of injured junior Anthony Mason Jr., was 7-for-13 from the field, while Burrell, who had five offensive rebounds, was 7-for-12. Wright was 6-for-8 on 3s as the Red Storm finished 11-for-21 from behind the arc.
Fairleigh Dickinson shot 43.6 percent for the game after hitting 59.3 (16-for-27) in the opening half. The Red Storm were able to wear the Knights with the much more intense defense that included plenty of pressure on the ball. Four FDU players played at least 33 minutes.
Mason, who has been out since spraining his left ankle in a scrimmage on Nov. 3, is expected to return Wednesday against Long Island University.
