NEWARK, N.J. (AP)—Garrison Carr scored 15 points—all from 3-point range—as American University routed the New Jersey Institute of Technology 73-50 on Saturday.
Travis Lay, Derrick Mercer and Frank Borden all added 10 points for American (3-3), which took command early on and held double-digit leads for most of the game. Leading 34-18 at the break, the Eagles opened the second half with a 25-4 run, as the Highlanders could not overcome their own sloppy play and a strong Eagles defense.
Dan Stonkus went 5-for-7 from the floor and finished with 15 points for the Highlanders (0-5). Kraig Peters added 13 points and Nesho Milosevic had a game-high six rebounds for N.J. Tech, which closed the game with an 18-4 run.
While both teams made about 47 percent of their shots, the Highlanders committed 26 turnovers while only forcing 11 by the Eagles. American also had 11 steals, compared to three for the Highlanders.
N.J. Tech did win the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Eagles 30-26.
