LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP)—Jason Thompson scored 21 points and younger brother Ryan Thompson had 19, leading Rider to an 82-73 victory against Penn State in the second round of the Old Spice Classic on Friday.
Rider (3-2) led 74-69 with 2:24 remaining before Harris Mansell became the first of four Broncs to hit a pair of free throws down the stretch.
Another pair of brothers helped Rider overcome a 13-point deficit. Harris Mansell scored 17 points and Patrick Mansell, who didn’t play in the first half, finished with 13.
Geary Claxton led Penn State (2-2) with 23 points and a dozen rebounds. Jamelle Cornley scored 17 points and Mike Wagner added 11 for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State began a 12-2 run midway through the first half en route to a 34-21 advantage. Rider scored 16 of the next 18 points for a 37-36 halftime lead, then Justin Robinson extended the streak to 19-2 from behind the arc a minute after the break.
Rider led by 10 points five times in the second half. The lead peaked at 74-63 on a free throw by Jason Thompson with 4:26 to play.
