MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP)—Reserve DeShawn Wright made a layup with 5 seconds left to lead San Jose State to a 78-77 victory Thursday over Middle Tennessee.
Middle Tennessee (0-1) had taken a 77-76 lead with 24 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Nigel Johnson.
San Jose (1-0) had led 75-69 with 2:39 left on a basket by Wright, but Johnson made two 3-pointers down the stretch.
Lance Graham led the Spartans with 16 points while C.J. Webster had 15 and Tim Pierce 13. Wright finished with 8.
Reserve Demetrius Green led Middle Tennessee with 17 points and Desmond Yates had 16. Kevin Kanaskie had 11 and Calvin O’Neil and Johnson 10 each.
San Jose led 39-30 at halftime and was ahead most of the second half.
The Spartans hit 62 percent from the field, including 7-of-13 3-pointers. Middle Tennessee shot 45 percent from the field and made 6-of-12 3-pointers.
