Penn State 74, St. Francis, Pa., 64
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Geary Claxton had 23 points and 10 rebounds and keyed a crucial second-half run for Penn State in a 74-64 victory over St. Francis, Pa., in the Nittany Lions’ opener Monday night.
Claxton scored four points in an 11-0 outburst at the start of the second half, including a one-handed dunk over St. Francis’ Devin Sweetney. That basket extended Penn State’s lead to 13 points, and the Red Flash (0-2) never got closer than six the rest of the way.
Freshman guard Talor Battle scored 12 points in his debut, and junior college transfer Stanley Pringle finished with seven steals, one short of a Penn State record. Battle and Pringle were two of six newcomers to see significant playing time for the Nittany Lions.
Grant Surprenant scored 20 points on 6-for-10 shooting for the Red Flash, and Cale Nelson added 12 points and seven assists.
The Red Flash held the lead for more than seven minutes in the first half, but Penn State never trailed by more than three points before moving out to a 33-29 lead at the break.
