Winthrop 77, Missouri St. 66
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP)—Michael Jenkins scored 25 points, including 16 in the second half, to lead Winthrop to a 77-66 win over Missouri State University Friday in a late-season, non-conference matchup.
Winthrop (23-4), from the Big South Conference, shot 64 percent from the field in the second half and hit eight of 13 3-point tries to hand Missouri State (19-9), from the Missouri Valley Conference, its worst home-court loss of the season.
It was Winthrop’s 13th straight win.
Missouri State held a 28-27 first-half lead but Winthrop took the lead for good on its first basket of the second half, a 3-pointer by Craig Bradshaw. With Missouri State trailing 41-37 with 12:53 left, Winthrop took off on a 25-14 run, led by Jenkins with 13, to push ahead to a 66-51 lead with 4:08 left.
Missouri State made its first 3-pointer in the second half with 37.5 seconds left and made just two of 14 for the half for 14.3 percent. For the game, Missouri State shot 22.2 percent from the 3-point line while Winthrop hit 14 of 27 for 52 percent.
A basket by Devon Mitchell with 1:44 left cut Winthrop’s lead to 69-60 but Winthrop hit six of seven free throws and a basket by Antwon Harris to close out the game.
Bradshaw finished with 16. Chris Gaynor added 11 and Torrell Martin scored 10.
Mitchell led Missouri State with 21. Ahearn and Nathan Bilyeu each had 10.
