HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP)—Mark Dorris scored 20 points to lead Marshall to a 59-58 upset of Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Marshall (4-8) built 38-17 lead in the first half, then held on for the win. Dorris scored 17 in the opening half, including three 3-pointers.
Virginia Tech (9-4) mounted a comeback in the second half. The Hokies went on a 22-12 run after the break and took the lead 56-55 with less than two minutes to play.
Marshall regained a 57-56 advantage and with 16 seconds to play, Tre Whitted sank a pair of free throws to stretch the advantage to three.
Virginia Tech cut the deficit to 59-58, but with five seconds to play Zabian Dowdell’s last-chance shot was deflected by Marshall’s Jean Francois Bro-Grebe. Dowdell scored 17 to lead Virginia Tech.
