PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP)—Dwain Williams scored a career-high 19 points, including five 3-pointers, to spark Providence to its fifth straight win, 67-50, over Fairfield.
Herbert Hill also had 18 points for the Friars (6-1), and Weyinmi Efejuku had 17.
Anthony Johnson with 10 points was the only player in double figure for the Stags (2-8).
Efejuku’s dunk gave Providence a 40-29 lead four minutes into the second half. Fairfield then rallied to draw within four, 45-41, on a layup by Greg Nero.
But Williams sank two straight treys in a minute to boost the Friars lead to 51-41, and the closest that Fairfield came after that was eight. Williams has converted 10 of 15 3-point tries this season.
There were three ties and three lead changes in the first half. Efejuku and Sharaud Curry combined for 17 points and made 4-of-5 3-point attempts in leading the Friars to a 31-25 halftime lead.
Providence shot 54.8 per cent (23-42) while holding the Stags to just 38.1 per cent. They held a 10-0 edge in fast-break points.
