HAMPTON, Va. (AP)—Michael Freeman had 22 points and Rashad West had 20 as Hampton beat UNC-Greensboro 71-64 Thursday night.
It was Hampton’s first win over the Spartans (2-5), who came into the game with a 3-0 record against the Pirates.
Hampton (2-6) scored nine straight points to open the game, but the Spartans went on an 8-2 run and then a steal and layup by Oleksiak tied it at 17 with 13:30 left in the half. Neither team was able to get ahead by more than four points the rest of the half, and a put back by Kyle Hines at the buzzer tied it at 32 apiece at the break.
The Spartans scored the first five points in the second half, but Hampton followed with a 14-3 run to go up 46-40 with 13 minutes to play. Hampton extended the lead to 12 before UNC-Greensboro fought back to get within four in the final minute.
Both teams shot about 45 percent and had nearly identical stats, including points in the paint (28), points off turnovers (25) and second-chance points (15).
Freeman had nine rebounds for Hampton, and Demario Mattox added 12 points.
Kevin Olekstak and Hines each had 19 points for the Spartans. Hines has scored in double figures in 28 consecutive games, breaking Ricky Hickman’s school record set last year.
