SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (AP)—Ryan Bright scored 22 points and Sam Houston State beat East Tennessee State 72-61 on Friday in the South Padre Island Invitational consolation semifinals.
The Bearkats (3-2) will play Delaware State, a 65-63 winner over Southern earlier Friday, in the consolation final Saturday.
Aaron Wade scored 11 points for the Bearkats and Reggie Rawlings, JeJuan Plair and Shamir McDaniel each added 10.
Andrew Reed led the East Tennessee State (2-4) with 15 points. Courtney Pigram and Brad Nuckles each added 14.
Sam Houston State led by as many as 12 points in the first 20 minutes, but the Buccaneers narrowed the lead to 37-34 by halftime.
East Tennessee State briefly took the lead in the second half and led by as much as three. But Sam Houston State came back and took the lead for good when Bright scored a short jumper with 13:16 left.
East Tennessee State plays Southern on Saturday in the tournament’s consolation third-place game.
