LAS VEGAS (AP)—Junior guard LaDarious Weaver had a season-high 19 points to lead Tennessee State past Prairie View A&M 60-49 in the third round of the Las Vegas Invitational Friday afternoon.
Weaver shot 6-of-12 from the field, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range. He also had three steals.
Also for the Tigers (1-2), Clarence Matthews had 12 points and nine rebounds. Moraye Ivy added nine points and six rebounds for the winners, who out-rebounded the Panthers 53-29.
Chris Gaines led the Panthers (1-4) with nine points. Ivory McGilvery added seven points.
After leading 30-26 at halftime, Tennessee State never trailed, building its largest lead at 50-36 with 9:03 left in the game. The Panthers got within 56-49 with under a minute left, but no closer.
For the game, Tennessee State shot 18-of-52 from the field, while Prairie View was 15-of-52. From the free-throw line, the Tigers were 19-of-35, and the Panthers were 16-of-18.
Weaver scored 13 first-half points, highlighted by 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range.
Prairie View jumped to a 5-2 lead, but never led again.
The Panthers were held to 32 percent shooting in the first half, going 7-of-22, while the Tigers were 9-of-22.
