FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP)—Shawn Huff scored 21 points and Urule Igbavboa had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead Valparaiso to a 75-67 win over IPFW Monday night.
Valparaiso led by one point when a pair a free throws by Calum MacLeod started a 7-0 that gave the Crusaders (1-0) a 69-61 advantage with 1:07 left in the game.
Quintin Carouthers ended the run with a layup for IPFW, but the Mastodons could not cut the lead to less than five points as the Crusaders hit five straight free throws to end the game.
Zeljko Egeric led IPFW (0-1) with 17 points as he hit five 3-pointers. The Mastodons outscored Valparaiso 33-6 from 3-point range, but the Crusaders were 31-41 on free throws and IPFW was 6-12 from the line.
Quintin Carouthers added 12 points for IPFW and Kyle Savely scored 10.
Jake Deibler had 13 points for Valparaiso and MacLeod finished with 10 points.
