Mississippi St. 61, Loyola Marymount 37

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP)—Barry Stewart scored 13 points to lead Mississippi State to 61-37 rout of Loyola Marymount on Monday.

Jamont Gordon added 12 points and led the Bulldogs (2-0) in assists with five. Charles Rhodes chipped in 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

It was the lowest scoring game for the Lions (1-1) since scoring 29 points against Southern California in 1949.

Mississippi State opened the game with a successful jumper by Piotr Stelmach and never lost the lead. The Bulldogs led 30-17 at the half behind seven points and two blocks from Charles Rhodes.

The Lions were just 12-for-58 shooting, but pulled to within seven with 14 minutes left in the second half. Three fouls sent Gordon to the line for three points and Barry Stewart hit three more, putting the Bulldogs back ahead by 13.

Mississippi State earned 24 of its 61 points at the free throw line. Loyola sent the Bulldogs to the line 33 times while drawing just 14 free shots on the Bulldog defense.

Brandon Worthy led Loyola Marymount with 11 points on 2-6 shooting from the field and 6-6 from the line.

Loyola’s Matthew Knight added another 10, while Derick Grubb had five points for the Lions before fouling out of the game with just over six minutes left to play.
