FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP)—Ronnie Brewer scored 16 points to lead four Arkansas players in double figures, and the Razorbacks allowed their fewest points since 1981 in a 77-35 win over Southern Mississippi on Wednesday night.
Brewer, who entered averaging 21.4 points per game, scored 15 in the first half. The game was tied at 11 with 12:00 remaining, but the Razorbacks (4-2) went on a 28-10 run to finish the half.
Arkansas led 36-21 when Southern Mississippi’s Courtney Beasley was called for traveling with 1.7 seconds remaining. Brewer caught the inbounds pass with his back to the basket, then made a twisting 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Shawn Simpson had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Southern Mississippi, which lost its fourth straight. The Golden Eagles (1-4) are struggling in their second season under Larry Eustachy. Southern Mississippi has been held under 40 points in three of its last four games.
Jason Forte is the only player to start every game this season for the Golden Eagles, and he went scoreless against Arkansas.
Jonathon Modica and Darian Townes had 14 points each for the Razorbacks, and Vincent Hunter added 10. Dontell Jefferson had eight assists, his third game this season with at least that many.
Arkansas allowed its fewest points since a 47-33 win over Southern Methodist almost 25 years ago.
Arkansas shot 58 percent from the field.
Steven Hill had four of the Razorbacks’ eight blocked shots. Arkansas had only nine turnovers—six of which were in the second half with the outcome no longer in doubt.
