BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP)—Randall Hanke scored 20 points as Providence, which trailed by six points in the second half, rallied for an 81-78 victory over Fairfield Monday.
Sharaud Curry hit a deep 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down to give Providence (3-0) a 72-64 lead with 3:32 to play.
Fairfield had a chance to tie with 1:40 left, but an open 3-pointer by Terrence Todd missed.
A Hanke dunk and Curry layup in the final 1:12 put the game away for Providence.
Geoff McDermott added 15 points and nine rebounds for Providence. Danny Oglesby led Fairfield (0-3) with a career-high 24 points and Todd and Michael Van Schaick added 14 apiece.
Providence, which committed 21 turnovers, out-rebounded Fairfield 37-25. Providence trailed 51-45 with 13:16 to play, but responded with a 13-0 run.
