SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—DaShawn Freeman scored 18 points and nailed a jumper with 26 seconds remaining to give Sacramento State a 85-78 win over the San Francisco on Saturday.
Haron Hargrave added 17 points and Loren Leath with 17, with five players in double figures for the Hornets (3-2) in their first win at War Memorial Gym.
Jason Wallace-Carter scored 15 of his career-high 23 points in the first half for San Francisco. The Dons (1-3) never led in the second half and fell to 7-2 in the all-time series with Sacramento State.
Hargrave scored seven points in 44 seconds to build up a 55-45 lead with 12 minutes to play in regulation.
San Francisco cut the deficit to five points before Hargrave completed a three-point play. He scored an acrobatic layup and was fouled by Alan Wiggins Jr., as the Hornets bench erupted in a standing ovation.
Freshman Drew Shiller scored his first points of the game with 5:31 remaining and it was a 3-pointer to tie the game for the Dons at 63.
Sacramento State pulled ahead by four points on Freeman’s layup but Armondo Surratt made a pair of free throws to make it a 74-72 game with 1:58 to play.
San Francisco (1-2) has been shooting poorly this season and began the game 2-9 from the field. Sacramento State shot 4-8 and went on a 11-0 run to take a 16-6 lead.
The Dons made 9 of their next 16 shots and outscored the Hornets 21-7. The Hornets had a more balanced first half, including 5-9 from 3-point range, and led 34-32 at the break.
