AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—Alex Bausley scored 16 points, including a key layup in overtime, to lead Sacramento State to a 67-64 win over Southern on Wednesday night in a consolation round game of the Guardians Classic tournament.
Jason Harris, the preseason Big Sky Conference player of the year, added 15 points and seven rebounds for Sacramento State (1-1), the night after scoring three points in a loss to Samford. He had 13 points in the first half.
Tied at 61-61 after regulation, Sacramento State used a 6-0 run to seize the lead on two free throws by DaShawn Freeman, Bausley’s layup and a putback by Clark Woods.
Southern (0-2) had a chance to send it to a second overtime but a last-second 3-pointer by Deforrest Riley-Smith rattled around the rim before bouncing out. Chris Alexander led Southern with 15 points.
Southern outrebounded Sacramento State 44-39 but committed 18 turnovers. The teams combined to shoot 6-of-30 from 3-point range. The tournament is using an experimental distance of 20 feet, 9-inches, one foot deeper than normal.
