LOS ANGELES (AP)—Thomas Shewmake had a game-high 14 points and 11 rebounds as Cal State Northridge beat UC Riverside 57-43 Thursday night.
In a game marked by poor shooting at both ends, Northridge led from wire-to-wire, taking a 31-16 lead into the break and never allowing its lead get any smaller than seven points in the second half.
The Matadors shot 37.7 percent (20-for-53) to Riverside’s 29.5 (13 of 44).
Riverside twice got to within seven after the break, first when Vili Morton’s free-throw with 12:54 left capped an 8-0 run that was that made it 37-30.
Cal State Northridge (3-7, 1-1 Big West Conference), which opened the second half by making just two of its first eight shots, answered with a 6-0 run to stretch its lead back to double-digits.
Later the Matadors went on an 11-2 run that made it 56-40 with 3:31 remaining. The Matadors made four consecutive baskets during that stretch, and Ian Boylan scored six of his 11 points during the run.
Rickey Porter led UC Riverside (4-6, 0-2), which has lost all five of its road games this season, with 13 points.
Davin White added in 10 for Northridge.
In the first half, Northridge opened with a 7-0 run and later went on a 12-2 spurt to take a 24-11 lead with 4:15 left.
The Matadors went into halftime with a 31-16 lead.
