Vermont 64, Holy Cross 59
WORCESTER, Mass. (AP)—Taylor Coppenrath scored 22 points as Vermont beat Holy Cross 64-59 on Thursday night.
Germain Mopa Njila scored seven points in a 13-3 run that gave Vermont (5-3) a 47-42 lead halfway through the second half. He finished with 13 points and T.J. Sorrentine added 15 for the Catamounts.
Keith Simmons scored 15 points, leading four players in double figures for Holy Cross (6-4). The Crusaders twice cut the lead to two points in the final minutes but could not retake the lead.
The Catamounts trailed 32-28 at halftime before Coppenrath scored 8 of Vermont’s 10 points to open the second half. Hamilton then scored Holy Cross’s next 5 points, cutting the lead to 39-34 with 15:07 left.
Torey Thomas scored a layup, John Hurley put back an offensive rebound and Simmons hit two free throws as the Crusaders cut the lead to 53-52 with 4:57 remaining.
Coppenrath’s three-point play and two free throws opened the lead again, but Kevin Hamilton hit a three-point shot to close the lead to 58-56 with 1:21 left.
Coppenrath hit two more foul shots and David Hehn another free throw before Thomas’ three-pointer cut the lead 61-59 with 27 seconds left.
