PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Mardy Collins scored 25 points to lead Temple past Princeton 48-46 on Monday night, giving John Chaney a victory in his 1,000th game as a college head coach.
Dustin Salisbery blocked a shot by Will Venable in the final seconds to preserve the victory.
Mark Tyndale added 11 points for the Owls (4-5), who went 21-of-33 from the free throw line to beat the Tigers in the first meeting between the schools in almost 30 years.
The win gave Chaney a career mark of 712-288, including a 225-59 record and a national championship at Division II Cheyney State. He improved to 487-229 since taking over the Owls in 1982.
Venable and Noah Savage each scored 12 points to lead Princeton (5-3), which had its four-game winning streak snapped.
Scott Greenman made two 3-pointers, the second with 14 seconds left, to pull Princeton within 47-46.
After Collins made one of two free throws, Salisbery knocked a pass out of bounds with 6.7 seconds remaining. Venable took the inbounds pass and appeared to have a clear lane, but Salisbery came over and knocked the ball away off the glass as time expired.
