NEW YORK (AP)—Lamont Hamilton had 24 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double and St. John’s beat Virginia Tech 75-65 on Wednesday night.
Daryll Hill added 18 points for the Red Storm (3-3), who had lost three of four.
Carlos Dixon had 22 points for Hokies (4-2), who lost their second straight loss, while Zabian Dowdell added 14 points and Jamon Gordon and Coleman Collins each had 10.
Gordon hit a 3-pointer with 4:37 left in the first half to give Virginia Tech a 32-27 lead. Hill then made five free throws in a 13-3 run to close the half that gave the Red Storm a 40-35 lead.
Dixon opened the second half with a jumper then St. John’s went on an 11-4 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 51-41 with 14:14 to play. Hamilton, a 6-foot-9 sophomore, had five points in the burst.
A dunk and a layup by Dixon in a 9-3 run got the Hokies within 54-50 with 9:48 left, but Hamilton had two field goals in a 9-4 run that secured the win for St. John’s.
Last season this would have been a Big East Conference game, but Virginia Tech and Miami left for the Atlantic Coast Conference.
