ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP)—Dameon Mason scored 21 of his 26 points in the second half and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Marquette to a 95-87 win over Oakland University on Saturday night.
Travis Diener added 23 points for Marquette (6-0), which made 13 3-pointers in the game compared to Oakland’s six. The Golden Eagles shot 8-of-15 from behind the 3-point arc in the first half.
Marquette hit five consecutive 3-pointers and used a 15-3 run to take a 15-point lead with 6:36 left in the first. Oakland (0-3) managed to close the deficit to 44-37 going into halftime.
The Golden Grizzlies closed to within two points with 11:20 to go in the game on a basket by Rawle Marshall, but Marquette answered with a 12-4 run to grab a 72-62 lead with 6:52 remaining.
Oakland made another run at the Golden Eagles by cutting the deficit to 76-72 on a 3-point play by Cortney Scott, but baskets by Marcus Jackson and Mason, including a pair of free throws, upped Marquette’s lead to 82-72 with 3:40 to go.
Oakland trimmed the lead to six with 3:02 left, but couldn’t get any closer.
Steve Novak scored 14 points, Jackson had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Todd Townsend added 10 points for Marquette.
Marshall scored a career-high 31 points and Scott had 24 points and nine rebounds to lead Oakland.
