PROVO, Utah (AP)—Richard Midgley scored 15 points Saturday to lead California to a 67-64 win over Brigham Young, breaking the Cougars’ streak of 18 straight home wins.
It also broke a 40-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents for BYU (1-3). The last non-conference opponent to beat the Cougars at home was California in 1998.
Rod Benson added 14, DeVon Hardin scored 12 and Marquise Kately had 10 for the Golden Bears (3-1).
California’s Martin Smith hit one of two free throws with 18 seconds left to put the Golden Bears up 67-64, forcing an errant last-second 3-point attempt from BYU center Jared Jensen.
BYU’s Mike Hall scored a career-high 23 points in a losing effort, and Jensen scored 12.
California built a 6-1 lead and never trailed.
BYU trailed 61-50 with about seven minutes left before staging a comeback that fell just short. Hall, Jensen and Terry Nashif combined for BYU’s final 23 points, with Hall scoring the last 12.
