West Virginia 77, IUPUI 74

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP)—Sophomore Johannes Herber’s basket from near midcourt at the buzzer lifted West Virginia to a 77-74 victory over IUPUI on Wednesday night.

IUPUI (4-3) lost on a shot in the final minute for the second straight game. Dayton’s Ramod Marshall hit a jumper with 40 seconds left for a 61-59 win on Saturday.

West Virginia (5-2) led by as many as 12 in the second half before IUPUI came back to tie the score with 1.9 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Odell Bradley, who had a game-high 27 points.

West Virginia’s Pat Beilein then ran the baseline and threw the ball to midcourt, where Herber took two dribbles and launched a high-arcing shot that went through the net.

West Virginia’s D’or Fischer had 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Kevin Pittsnogle and leading scorer Drew Schifino had 11 points apiece. Shifino also had 10 rebounds. Beilein had 10 points.

IUPUI’s Akeem Clark added 19 points, Brandon Cole scored 14 and Matt Crenshaw had 12.

After Clark put IUPUI ahead 36-35 on a 3-pointer three minutes after halftime, West Virginia went on a 13-0 run behind eight straight points from Fischer for its largest lead, 48-36, with 13:01 left.

IUPUI, which made 13-of-25 3-pointers for the game, hit five of them down the stretch to close to 74-71.

Bradley missed a free throw with 7 seconds left. The rebound was batted around before Bradley gained possession and hit the tying 3-pointer.<
