Arizona St. 85, UCLA 69
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP)—Ike Diogu had 12 of his 26 points in the final 7:27 as Arizona State beat UCLA 85-69 Saturday to sweep the Bruins for the first time in 23 years.
Curtis Millage scored 22 points. Tommy Smith had 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, and Kyle Dodd contributed 14 points, eight assists and five rebounds off the bench.
The Sun Devils (17-7, 9-4 Pac-10) beat the Bruins 75-64 on Jan. 16 in Los Angeles. Their last sweep in the rivalry was in 1979-80.
The loss was another setback for coach Steve Lavin, who has coached UCLA to the round of 16 five times in the last six years but now faces the prospect of not even getting a Pac-10 tournament bid. The Bruins (5-16, 2-10) lost their 10th straight in conference play.
Jason Kapono was UCLA’s only double-figure scorer with 21.
No more than six points separated the teams in the first half, which saw six ties and seven lead changes.
Kapono, who had taken only two shots until then, sent UCLA to a 29-28 lead with a 3-pointer with 4:02 left in the half and made a fallaway jumper 35 seconds later.
Dodd’s free throws with 37 seconds to go got Arizona State within one, but Ryan Walcott hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to lift the Bruins to a 39-35 lead.
It was even tighter in the second half after Donnell Knight got the Sun Devils within 39-38 with a three-point play 29 seconds in.
The lead changed hands five more times in 1:22, starting with a 3-pointer by Millage and ending on two foul shots by Diogu that put Arizona State ahead 52-51 with 12:28 left.
Then the Sun Devils got the stops they needed—Kapono negated his own basket by pushing off on Shawn Redhage, and Diogu scored on a goal-tend by Ray Young.
On UCLA’s next possession, Young threw the ball out of bounds trying to reach Kapono, and Arizona State resoundingly claimed the momentum with Smith’s dunk off an alley-oop pass by Dodd.
Smith was fouled and missed the free throw, but Redhage rebounded, and Millage made two 3-pointers in 32 seconds, opening a 62-51 lead with 11:02 remaining.
In the next 2:21, Smith scored twice after tearing rebounds away from UCLA players and Dodd sank a 3-pointer to maintain the 11-point lead.
T.J. Cummings scored underneath to cut the cut the Bruins’ deficit to 69-62 with 7:48 to go, but Diogu had two three-points plays, a follow, two free throws and a dunk—the last making it 81-66 with 1:31 left.
