Sam Houston St. 62, Texas-Arlington 60
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Sam Houston State blew a nine-point lead in the final three minutes but held off Texas-Arlington 62-60 Thursday night on Jay Oliphant’s offensive rebound and basket with 3.5 seconds to play.
Still, Keith Howell nearly won the game for UTA at the buzzer, throwing up a shot from midcourt that hit the back of the rim and bounced out.
Donald Cole led Sam Houston (9-4, 6-1 Southland) with 17 points.
Derrick Obasohan and Mack Callier led the Mavericks (6-7, 3-2) with 12 points each. Callier also had 10 rebounds. Josh Daniel had 10 points and seven assists.
The Bearkats led 59-50 with three minutes to play, but Daniel’s 3-pointer sparked a 10-1 run that tied the game with 26.8 seconds remaining. Obasohan scored five points during the run, including the two free throws that tied the game at 60-60.
Sam Houston worked for the last shot, and Cole missed a shot, but Oliphant was there with a putback after his 11th rebound of the game.
UTA led for most of the first half. Callier’s 3-pointer gave the Mavs a four-point lead at 7:17 of the first half, but over the next three minutes Sam Houston went on a 10-1 run to go ahead by five.
The Mavs came back and led 31-28 at the half.
