WASHINGTON (AP)— Glenn Stokes scored 15 of his career-high 26 points in the first half to lead American to a 76-51 win over Elon Saturday afternoon.

In the first meeting between the two schools since 1933, American (4-5) made nine 3-pointers, four by Stokes, which helped the Eagles win their third straight at home.

Scottie Rice led Elon (4-4) with 14 points, but the Phoenix fell behind 18-4 early and never got closer than eight.

The Eagles, who led 34-19 at halftime, opened the second half on a 14-4 run that was capped by a 3-point-play by Matej Cresnik with 15:03 to play.

Cresnik finished with 14 points for the Eagles.

American’s defense forced 23 turnovers while holding the Phoenix, who did not attempt a free throw in the first half, to just 39 percent shooting from the floor.
