BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP)—Bryant Matthews scored 26 points and Virginia Tech ended defending national scoring champion Jason Conley’s streak of 20-point game at 15 Thursday night in the Hokies’ 71-66 victory against Virginia Military Institute.
Virginia Tech (4-2) led 34-27 at halftime and by at least four points for the last 18 minutes, even while going the last 4:09 without a field goal. Dimari Thompkins was 6-for-6 from the foul line and the Hokies were 10-for-10 the rest of the way.
Conley, the national scorer leader last season as a freshman, scored 17 points for the Keydets (2-2), making only 6 of 17 shots from the field. Richard Little also scored 17 and Radee Skipworth had 13.
Matthews made 5 of 7 3-pointers, including three in the second half.
Terry Taylor and Thompkins each added 10 points for the Hokies.
