BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP)—Terry Taylor scored 21 points and took 10 rebounds to lead Virginia Tech to a 69-61 win over American Friday night.
Taylor hit 9 of 14 field goal attempts and went 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. His 10 rebounds included five each on offense and defense. Carlos Dixon followed with 16 points, including four 3-pointers on six tries.
The Hokies (3-1) led by 1 point at the intermission and never lost the lead during the second half. American pulled within 3 points with 4:38 remaining, but Tech quickly increased its lead and never let the Eagles (0-3) get closer than 4 points again.
During the final half-minute, American missed on four 3-point tries, a layup and a jumper, while Taylor and Dimari Thompkins made good on four free-throw chances to stretch the Hokies’ lead back to 8 points.
