Michigan State and Florida met 10 seasons ago for the national title. While the Spartans may seem like the better bet to get back this season, the Gators feel they have significantly improved.

They’ll meet Friday night in the semifinals of the Legends Classic in Atlantic City, N.J., with both trying to improve to 5-0.

The second-ranked Spartans are off to their best start since going 12-0 in 2000-01 - the season after they beat Florida 89-76 for their last national title. Michigan State has won two of three matchups since, although the teams haven’t met since the Spartans’ 68-46 second-round NCAA tournament victory in 2003.

While Michigan State is trying to return to the Final Four after losing to North Carolina in last season’s title game, Florida is seeking its fourth 5-0 start in five years. The Gators, however, have missed the last two NCAA tournaments after winning back-to-back titles.

Florida and No. 5 Kentucky are the only remaining unbeaten SEC teams, and the Gators are pointing at this matchup to see where they stand after winning by an average of 21.5 points in their first four.

“How we handle adversity, how we handle Michigan State, how we handle some of the things that are getting ready to come our way, we’ll wait and see,” coach Billy Donovan said.

Donovan’s squad will get a chance to face a Michigan State team that is limiting opponents to 36.0 percent shooting. The Spartans use a rotation of mostly eight players with six at least 6-foot-3, and all seem to have bought into coach Tom Izzo’s defensive philosophy.

“When you’re in a huddle with 15 minutes left to go and people are talking about ‘Let’s finish the game tonight, let’s make sure we don’t let up defensively, let’s not ruin our field goal percentage, let’s try to keep building on this,’” Izzo said. “That means they heard, and I think that makes a coach feel better than anything there is.”

While Izzo can count on Big Ten preseason player of the year Kalin Lucas and other veterans such as Raymar Morgan and Chris Allen, the Gators are leaning heavily on two newcomers.

Freshman Kenny Boynton is their leading scorer at 17.5 points per game while starting center Vernon Macklin is a Georgetown transfer. They’ll be playing away from home for the first time after a 68-52 victory Tuesday over Florida State.

“I don’t know how it’s going to turn out,” Donovan said. “I just feel up to this point in time these kids are different kids than they were a year ago. They’ve matured, there’s a different attitude, there’s a different air, there’s a difference with them right now.”

Michigan State also played its first four at home, winning 90-60 over Valparaiso on Sunday. Allen scored 22 and reserve Delvon Roe had 10 points and 17 rebounds.

“I was really pleased with our team’s play today,” Izzo said. “The unselfishness, the 13 assists on 15 baskets the first half was phenomenal.”

The winner will face Massachusetts or Rutgers in Saturday’s championship.

Ummm.....what are you thug KU trolls doing on here????

I'll take my chances with a respectable coach who does things the right way year in year out and doesn't recruit or maintain his program in the "gray" area of college basketball. I don't want NBA players on my Spartans, I don't want ghetto-fabulous thug ball.

In theory MSU was at most the 8th best team, if we were the 1st 3 seed. Seven teams better than us according to "polls". This is why the intelligent MSU posters here are saying rankings and especially wins and losses in November mean nothing. We're just waiting for March where Izzo ALWAYS gets more out of his teams than any other top coach, we NEVER have the most talent, but again, ALWAYS get farther than many teams that have more.

So much stupidity on these yahoo boards.

MSU will be laughing when we're in our 6th Final Four in 12 years. MSU had 24 turnovers and only lost by 3. That's 24 shots we didn't have considering we shot 52.5% in the game we would've made 12 or 13 of those shots and that's another 24-26 points not counting 3's. We would've won by 20 without the turnovers. Florida only won because of that bull@#$% 3 that guy had who careered it. Let's compare other stats of this game, MSU held a 38-20 rebounding edge, a 52.5%-41% shot percentage, a 16-10 offensive rebounding edge, an 18-11 assist edge, but Florida had 3 more 3's and 7 more steals. So, in conclusion, MSU just shot themselves in the foot, Florida didn't win the game, MSU beat themselves. Don't forget MSU swept Kansas in 2 games last year.

Florida beat Florida St. earlier in the week by 16 points. At the time FSU was just outside the top 25. I'm not sure that it's that much of a reach to say that UF is on the way back up. In case you forgot, the Gators were unranked to start the '05/'06 season when they won the first of two consecutive national championships. They may just be flying under the radar. One thing is for sure, they play defense and run, just like the earlier teams.

Like I've said... MSU is overrated. Every year we go through this. The media loves them and as soon as they play a decent team on the road they get punked. However, with that said, they have the guts to play the best teams in the country. Give them credit. Also, I love Izzo. His facial expressions alone make the game worth watching.

haha, this is funny. Just last week I believe some Michigan State fan was on a KU article saying that KU is overrated and MSU should be ranked number 1, that they were better and deserved it. Who's overrated now MSU?

And I find it very funny that all of you MSU fans are saying "Oh, these games don't matter anyway, wait until March." blah blah blah, but if It was KU who lost, they would be all over calling us overrated and saying we aren't going to make the tournament. Stop being hypocrites.

SEC is so overated. everything about them is smoke and mirrors. they like to hype that conference for some reason. nice win. im guessing the refs got the memo to let the gators win this one.

michigan state might as well have given florida the game. theyve started the year bad, but they always do. they look sloppy and out of sync, but once they get it together, like they always do, theyre going to be a tough ass team to beat. i agree they may not be the 2nd best team in the nation right now, but by the end of the year they will be. keep in mind both of their centers are true freshmen.

Idiots, this isn't football. Single Losses or wins for that matter don't matter as far as meaning your season is won or lost. It doesn't mean a team is over or under rated. Basketball has a whole season, which is used to judge worthyness to enter the tournament. This is why college basketball is the only NCAA sport that is legitamate and matters now. You SEC guys can have the success in football, it is a JOKE and EMBARRASSMENT to amatuer atheletics.

Even though I'm a true Blue Kentucky fan, I'm always glad to see the SEC schools do well....Florida played very well and is under-rated! They certainly have a great coach in Donavan and Gainsville is a tough place to go into and come out with a win! Florida in my opinion...at least for the past few years has the best overall athletic program and thats hard to argue. That being said....I think M.S.U. will get it together and be hard to beat come tournament time...Its still early.

Josh W - don't read too much into games in which teams play back to back when we have NOT even reached December yet. Teams are no where close to how they will look by mid-Januay; which is still 7 weeks before Conference Tournaments will be played. Michigan State is NOT my favorite team, but they are consistent and will play much better than they did in the game vs. Florida. Also, the same people who appeared to be ranking MSU too high, ranked MICHIGAN to high, and Marquette to low!

Ok EVERYBODY NOW....It's early, these games don't mean ANYTHING. Wait until March and we'll be right there. MSU gets to chant the loser's mantra now. Kentucky (even though they won), Ohio State and UNC started chanting it a week or so ago.

Just wondering, if these games don't mean anything...and of course the conference games really don't mean anything (unless you happen to win it)...even the conference tournament doesn't mean anything (unless you hapen to win it)...only "Wait until March", shouldn't MSU (and Kentucky, Ohio St. and UNC) be refunding everyone for their season tickets? I mean, that's a lot of money to be dishing out just to see games that don't mean anything.

Let me repeat for those who may be a little slow..."These games don't mean anything. Wait until March and we'll be right there."

Mich St. was overrated to begin with; my friends owe me 200$ now that they lost this game. Enough of this "It's early, wait till it's April" bullcrap. Look at Wake Forest as an example last year, picked to finish 2nd in the ACC and ranked as high as #2 and #1 in the polls. After they went 7-0, they finished 14-10 in the regular season and as a 3 seed in the tournament they got "upset" by WVU.

Just wait 'till Mich. St. gets to play in Big-10 games, that'll be fun to watch.

11 of MSU's 29 games are against ranked top 25 teams. If they lose to UNRANKED florida, they'll be lucky to be .500 by the time the tourney comes around. Sorry whinestar, errr, winstar. Not gonna happen for you. The pundits got it wrong by ranking them so high to start the season...maybe next year...

You people are out of your damn minds! MSU overrated? OK, the team that beat Kansas, Louisville,
and UConn in the tournament last year and has most of their team return this year? You are either
mad MSU fans, or envious fans of MSU's basketball program, or angry UM fans because your
team lost to an unranked team as well yesterday. As prezin25 says earlier, see me in April when
the are ranked a 1 or 2 seed and on their way to their 6 Final Four appearance in 12 years.
You want to know a team that is overrated right now, pick one! For instance Ohio State.
And if you think Wisconsin is going to beat Duke, you must be high!

The media's lovefest for Izzo continues. "5 final four appearances since 1999". Whatever. Try going back to back! The Gators have been to the mountain top and had a look. This was no upset.
