Both Michigan and Marquette responded well to their first true challenges of the young season. The two teams now vie for a spot in the Old Spice Classic championship game Friday in Orlando, Fla.

The No. 15 Wolverines (3-0) had routed Northern Michigan and Houston Baptist by a combined 69 points before arriving in Orlando as the only ranked squad in the eight-team field. Manny Harris, though, had to rescue Michigan from an upset loss Thanksgiving Day by finishing one rebound shy of his second triple-double of the season in an 83-76 overtime victory over Creighton.

“Not disrespecting the other two teams we played, but that was kind of our first challenge,” said Harris, who played all 45 minutes and finished with 20 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.

The junior guard, who had 18 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in Michigan’s season opener versus Northern Michigan, is averaging 21.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists. Yet coach John Beilein thinks Harris can still play better.

“With his nine assists, I thought there were several times where he would press a little bit where he could’ve had 13 or 14 when the took it to the basket a few times,” Beilein said.

DeShawn Sims also had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolverines, who rallied from a six-point deficit in the final eight minutes of regulation. Laval Lucas-Perry, who had scored 10 points combined in the first two games, hit four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points.

Keeping Harris and the 6-foot-8 Sims, who is contributing 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, off the boards will be pivotal for Marquette (5-0) to have any chance of reaching the title game. The Golden Eagles battled past Xavier on Thursday for a 71-61 victory - despite getting outrebounded 48-32 - after posting four blowout wins at home over inferior opponents.

Lazar Hayward scored 27 points and Jimmy Butler added 15 for Marquette, which has only one player taller than 6-7 after projected starting center Chris Otule suffered a season-ending foot injury in practice Monday. The Golden Eagles, though, have been using their speed to their advantage and forced 20 turnovers by the Musketeers that led to 25 points.

Marquette has forced at least 17 turnovers in all five of its games and 20 or more in each of the last three.

Hayward is averaging 19.2 points and Butler 16.6 for the Golden Eagles, who are shooting 43.6 percent (41 for 94) from 3-point range. With 1,339 points, Hayward is nine shy of passing Cordell Henry for 20th on the school’s all-time scoring list.

Senior point guard Maurice Acker has emerged as a valuable reserve, averaging 10.0 points and shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc. He had 11 points, five steals and four assists in Thursday’s victory.

Michigan leads the all-time series 13-5, but the teams have not met since the Wolverines won 89-81 on Dec. 22, 1990.

    Hey Michigan -

Don't bring that "hairy high school" crap when you play Marquette! We're not just playing for nickels here. Don't come waltzing into the paint like you're at some Sunday school picnic game. You'll get knocked on your backside! You're playing the big boys now!

I guess Michigan is the Notre Dame of college basketball. By virtue of their name - they get a high ranking. Meanwhile, a Wisconsin, a Butler, a Xavier, a Marquette have to scratch, claw and gouge for every inch of respect.

Hey George...what game were you watching? A quicker, smarter Marquette coasted against a bigger, slower, poorly coached team...see Michigan coach comments! These early tourney games show how off the preseason rankings are...look back at last years preseason top 25 and see where they ended up. Lay off the MSU fans too...you have no chance of beating them this year. If you have to blow the Big Ten horn how 'bout a little love for Northwestern...knocking off overrated media darling Notre Dame.

to all you idiots saying the big 10 is overrated because of being beaten by unranked teams maybe you should remember north carolina getting killed by syracuse. just because they were unranked doesnt mean they arent good.

Gophers fan here, I think I speak for all of the Big 10 in saying that I hate these early season tournaments. The Big 10 plays a very physical type of basketball, and we often get officials that call every touch foul. These tournaments mean nothing, and when the games actually matter in March, the Big 10 always shows up. The Big 10 is still the best conference in basketball, and we will prove it come March Madness time.

All the so called "experts", talked about the Big East being weaker this year? Hmmm, I don't see it so far, with the exception of Duke knocking off Uconn. But even at that, Duke is not a minimal program by any means. Perhaps their statements that the Big East was in decline, was a premature mistake?

We will always be Warriors!!! I know we are not the Warriors in name only, so nice try. All Marquette fans still refer our team as the Warriors, but nice try on your lack of knowledge gang_green51! The Warriors may surprise like the year James, McNeal, and Matthews were freshman!

    LET'S GO WARRIORS!!!

A win over a very good Florida State team should certainly propell Marquette to atleast #20, after knocking off a so called #15. If not, the so called voting experts, have something other then coffee in their cups? Even if Marquette loses, if its close, they should be knocking at top 25's door!

WAY TO REP THE BIG EAST MARQUETTE (Coming from a 'Cuse fan)

North Carolina and Cal for the 'cuse, Vanderbilt and Maryland for Cincy', and now Michigan for Marquette. Even as a syracuse fan, I know underrated teams when I see them. Syracuse, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Seton Hall were all underrated teams in the preseason, but in the end it'll be these teams that pull through in the Big East's End.

Marquette is very disciplined.....they play outstanding team basketball. They make the most out of limited talent. Look for them to catch some Big East teams off guard and eke their way into the Big Dance!

I understand Marquette & Wisconsin both lost key players, but to not even have either team in the top 75 was short sighted. Buz Williams did some great recruiting, & how can anyone count out a Bo Ryan coached team? Ryan does more with less then perhaps any coach in college B-ball. If Wisconsin shoots near or above 50%, their defense will win close games. As far as Marquette, perhaps not this year, but the Big East better not take this team lightly, with team speed, this team is competitive with anyone.

Michigan was ranked 15? And Wisconsin and Marquette are unranked? Typical Michigan bias. Michigan State is ranked way too high as well. Come on, guys! That's just stupid!

You got to love those Marquette Warriors!

I can't quite understand your statements there George, but from what I read you sound a bit lacking in the sports knowledge area. I am a Big Ten fan and live in Big Ten country. And Big East basketball is way better then Big Ten ball. Its not even close. I'm not sure what world you are living in. And for the Big Ten,...Michigan has been garbage for a while and until they prove otherwise, that is where they should rest. So until you say something that is actually accurate we should all ignore your posts.

Marquetter has continued to put forth a winning team even in the midst of coaching changings and losing some high calibre players. It looks like that will continue this year. Congrats Marquette.

U never see marquette fans talk their team up except when they beat a ranked team... that's why the big east is not the best conference because the big east can't claim the depth and the coaching that the big ten has top to bottom... michigan will get their crack at uconn again ( the preseason big east champ) and don't be suprised if uconn loses that game you arrogant big east fans... marquette will be lucky to make the nit... because 1. what i say usually comes to reality and no. 2 michigan should have won this game hands down. and no. 3 marquette isn't that good (so chris p eat crow and die) ... guido michigan hoops wasn't in the big dance except for 1 time in the lasty 10 years so how in the world could u make such a crazy statement. and to that idiot state fan you'll find out how good we are this year it's time to make msu and um a basketball rivalry again starting this year ... who in the hell have the badgers played grant an adverage arizona team... and just for the record michigan will be in the ncaa tourney again and if they see marquette belien will have them prepared trust me...
