Illinois has enjoyed feeding off the crowd at Assembly Hall in opening with four consecutive wins.

It won’t have that luxury for its next three games.

The 20th-ranked Illini look to remain undefeated when they play their first game away from Champaign on Friday against Utah in the Las Vegas Invitational.

After outscoring its first three opponents by an average of 30.7 points, Illinois received its first test in Tuesday’s 78-64 win over Wofford.

With the game tied at 50-all with 13 minutes remaining in the second half, the Illini used an 8-0 run to pull away.

“We picked up the intensity and started playing together and talking more,” said junior guard Demetri McCamey, who scored a season-best 21. “We started using the crowd to our advantage. We got steals, we got put backs. We set the tone.”

Illinois now needs to prove it can win away from home.

After this game, the Illini face either Oklahoma State or Bradley on Saturday. When this tournament concludes, Illinois plays its first true road game Wednesday against No. 19 Clemson.

This tournament marks the first time the talented freshmen duo of Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson play away from Assembly Hall.

Paul is averaging a team-high 14.0 points while Richardson is third with 12.3 per game. The two are tough to guard because of their athleticism and ball-handling ability and have helped Illinois establish a 2.08 assist-to-turnover ratio, one of the best in Division I.

Richardson has really stepped in the last two games, scoring 15 in each while connecting on 9 of 12 shots from 3-point range.

Like Illinois, Utah (2-2) will be playing its first game away from campus. The Runnin’ Utes arrive in Las Vegas following Tuesday’s 77-74 loss to Seattle.

Utah led the Redhawks 41-33 at halftime but fell apart after the break, hitting 8 of 27 shots (29.6 percent) in the final 20 minutes. The Utes still had a chance late, but Shawn Glover’s last-second 3-point attempt bounced off the rim.

“We weren’t tough enough mentally or physically, offensively or defensively,” coach Jim Boylen said. “I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the way we played. I didn’t like giving up 19 offensive rebounds. I don’t like (only) 10 assists in this program. I’m disappointed.”

Carlon Brown led the Utes with 22 points but had another tough shooting night. The junior guard, who’s averaging a team-high 16.5 points, was a season-worst 5 of 17 from the floor and is hitting 38.2 percent of his shots.

It could be tough for him to find his rhythm against a defensive-minded Illini team that’s limiting opponents to 36.9 percent shooting.

This will be the first meeting between these teams since Illinois’ 99-65 victory Nov. 25, 1983, in Rosemont, Ill.

I sat in the stands of this game and watched the Illini had the game to Utah. Weber made some poor choices down the stetch. What I want to know is, why is Jeff Jordon getting so much playing time...? He's simply afraid to take shots. The freshman on the Illini squad have some potential, but they have a long way to go. With ZERO momentum down the stretch. The Illini shoudl have just taken it into overtime and hoped to change the tide there. Coaches call. He blew it.

aaron - the last time I checked Bill Self won a National Championship and has the #1 team in the nation. People like you are the reason that Illinois gets bashed (unintelligible comments). Look I love the Illini, but to act like Weber is better than Self makes you look silly.

some of you people really should understand the ins and outs of coaching and basketball before you open your mouths and start bashing Weber. Weber is bar far the best coach since Lou Henson. Bill Self would not have taken the '05 team to the championship game. it was Weber's system and coaching that got them there. Look at his record everwhere he has been. Most of you who post these comments probably never even hardly played highschool ball before and think you know how to play and coach. get a clue. And illini haters should just stick to posting to their own teams. we could all go on for days and days about eachothers programs. One let down for one half of a game with a young team and everyone thinks its the end of the road. Look how well weber got last year's team to play when no one even expected much. we did make the tournament last year and won 24 games without a good backcourt.

It's funny how people defend Weber. For you Weber apologists out there, what in the world has the guy done. The last time I check he took Bill Self's recruits and team to the Final Four and after those guys left where has the program gone? Bruce Weber is a terrible coach and most people outside of Illinois realize this.

And on the topic of this team is young. Get real. They start 3 Juniors. The days of starting 5 Seniors is over. There are a lot of teams that start Freshman that are doing just fine.

    Quit defending the clueless one.

This loss is on WEBER. He didn't have his team prepared and didn't manage the game or his players very well. Bruce was sorely out coached, sorry to say for all of those who think Weber can do no wrong. Maybe putting up with a lack of intensity, hustle and team play was part of Bruce's master plan to let his team lose one. Archaic thinking by some coaches is to let their team be humbled to use as motivation later on. If a coach needs something like that to remind his team they better listen to him means he isn't a good motivator or manager to start with, especially if the other coach can do it.

Very young team on the road early in the season. These things are going to happen and Utah needed every single break to go their way to win, IF they really got that shot off. Every year early season people forget this is basketball, not football where 1 loss can really hurt.

What concerns me more than the outcome was everyone standing around watching McCamey and Tisdale in the last 5 minutes. The freshmen need to have more confidence. That and rebounding is a concern for the entire season...we don't have the needed widebody.

BTW, those questioning Weber as a coach have no clue.

If I were coach and Demetri MCCamey did not get at least 8 assists in the previous game he would not start the next one. These type of one on one type players just don't get it! It's basketball with 5 players! This team is not a sweet 16 team, and maybe not even tournament worthy. Weber can't seem to develop or inspire players like other coaches do! Don't worry about building up the score and hurting the other teams coaches feelings. You got a lead like that at half time, then go out and bury them!!!

We have seen this before again and again last few seasons when the Illini stand around, make poor decisions and self-destruct, Coach Weber has no control of his team. Opposing coach settles his team down, gets them playing smarter and with intensity while Bruce Weber just watches his team go downhill and hit the wall and does NOTHING to affect their play. If Davis and Tisdale are too lazy to get rebounds get someone in there that will play with intensity. If McCamey is taking most of the shots, put in players that take care of the ball but whip the ball around to find an open teammate inside or drive inside. Watching your team stand around the outside and make lazy passes then miss outside or turn it over, that was the WEBER we have seen before.

Tisdale sank a bunch of outside shots but as usual had no presence in the paint and Utah drove for layups at will in that 2nd half and outrebounded the Illini. McCamey was the high scorer, but that's to be expected when he took 16 shots and rest of Illini outside Tisdale disappeared. Coach Weber was outcoached the 2nd half. Utah coach had his team playing with more intensity and driving the lane when their outside shots wouldn't fall - something Illini should have been doing. Where was Illinois' crisp passing and penetration?? Illinois settled for outside shots and shot 3's poorly. Crisp passing until an inside shot opened up was what Illinois needed, that and protecting the paint and rebounding. Where was Mike Davis? Keller and Cole played with more intensity and should have played more than Davis. Semrau and Griffey should have spelled Tisdale if he was too tired to guard down low and get rebounds. Illini in 2nd half looked like last year when McCamey was only one taking shots except for an occasional bad shot from others. Critical turnovers, bad shots and no "D" in the paint doomed Illinois.

It's going to be real simple this year for Illinois. If McCamey distributes the ball instead of taking shots, we will have a great year. If he does what he did in this game, we will struggle.

    Weber's challenge is controlling McCamey.

Well, well, well. The first loss and the whiners & complainers come out of the woodwork! Illini has a young line-up and will be tested all season. What they do need to work on is their inside game....3 pointers are not mandatory...and the two pointers multiply and are definitely complimented by the 3 point shot. McCamey can be a ball hog....personally I like to see Jeff Jordan in because he seems to fire up the players, moves quickly and sets up plays....to get the whole team involved. I believe the upper classman are a bit threatened by our new players. McCamey is not the whole team and Tisdale....get those LONG ARMS UP AND IN THEIR FACES!! Don't just watch the ball go over your head when the opponents shoot! You have the ability to "smack" it away! Get your lazy hindside in gear! And you all that are whining about Weber?!! He's a good coach.....get over your "Self"....I'm glad he's gone!

Dick F. You are absolutely right. I am a die-hard Illinois fan that realizes Weber is bad for our program. You would be amazed at the Illinois fans that think he is an unbelievable coach. It's like they have never left Illinois and talked to fans of other teams. It is very frustrating that our program went from Lon Krueger and Bill Self to Bruce Weber. Very disappointing.

Ha Ha Ill-Whine-I fans. Perfect day for the Ill-Whine-I. Get kicked by Cincy and lose to a Utah team that has lost to the likes of Seattle and Idaho.

Sure am glad it's you stuck with the likes of Zook and Weber.

Bruce Weber was outcoached in the 2nd half, Illini were out rebounded again, Demetri MCCamey took too many of the Illini shots so other team could key on him and ignore other Illini. Utah did what Illinois should have been doing in the 2nd half, drove the ball for layups when outside shot wasn't falling. Seems they drove the lane mostly uncontested repeatedly too. Utah just wanted it more and their coach had them fired up and playing smarter than Illini. For Illinois, live by the outside shot, die with the outside shot. No excuse not to defend the lane and get rebounds. Once again Tisdale was no force inside and Davis was invisible.
