Purdue and Tennessee entered the Paradise Jam as favorites to reach the title game. That matchup now will take place.

After surviving close calls against a pair of unranked opponents, the sixth-ranked Boilermakers and No. 9 Volunteers will play for the tournament crown Monday night at the University of Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center.

Purdue (3-0) and Tennessee (4-0) entered this season expecting to compete for their respective conference titles and make runs at the NCAA tournament.

Both teams are off to fast starts, but needed to overcome some adversity to face each other in the title game of the Paradise Jam. They have only met twice before, in the 1980-81 and 1981-82 seasons, splitting those matchups with the home team winning each time.

The Boilermakers opened this tournament with a 74-63 win over South Dakota State on Friday, as coach Matt Painter claimed his team needed to “play a lot smarter.”

That didn’t appear to happen early Sunday, as Purdue fell behind by nine points before using a 23-3 second-half run to overpower Saint Joseph’s and win 85-60, setting up the matchup with the Volunteers.

“When we fell behind it was a good opportunity for us to show some poise and keep fighting,” Painter said. “The key was our defense; (Chris) Kramer caused havoc and made it hard for them to get into their offense.”

Tennessee looked like a shoo-in for the final after winning its first two games of the season by an average of 52.0 points. The Vols carried that momentum into first round of the Paradise Jam on Friday, dominating East Carolina 105-66.

Things got a lot tougher in Sunday’s semifinals, however, as the Volunteers needed to rely on their defense before Tyler Smith converted a pair of free throws with 13.7 seconds left to beat DePaul 57-53.

“I’m going to give our defense credit tonight,” said coach Bruce Pearl, who saw his team shoot a season-low 37.3 percent but outrebounded the Blue Demons 44-30. “You win games with defense and rebounding.”

Scotty Hopson is looking for a better shooting performance against Purdue after getting a season-low four points on 2-for-10 shooting, including an 0-for-4 effort from 3-point range. The sophomore guard had 25 points in each of the previous two contests and leads Tennessee with an average of 17.5 points - up from the 9.2 he averaged as a freshman.

If Hopson struggles again Monday, the Volunteers have a trio of other solid scorers to rely upon, with Smith and swingman Cameron Tatum averaging 12.5 points and forward Wayne Chism getting 10.5.

Tennessee is shooting 51.8 percent from the floor and 47.7 from beyond the arc.

“Tennessee has the ability to beat you in a lot of different ways,” Painter said. “They have a lot of weapons.”

The Boilermakers’ scoring is also spread out with three players averaging in double-digits.

JaJuan Johnson, who shot 8 for 12 and had a season-high 18 points against the Hawks, leads the team with 15.3 points per game. E’Twaun Moore is averaging 14.0, and forward Robbie Hummel is scoring 13.3.

Johnson and Hummel, both juniors, are also combining for 13.6 rebounds per contest.

hey rick z hate to break it to you buddy but kentucky is in the sec and ranked 5th. they are the top team in the sec not tenn. tenn is probably the 2nd best team in sec just like purdue is in the big 10. so it's a wash in a 1pt game. could have gone either way. congrats purdue. good luck the rest of the year!

Shut up, Purdue fans. You're making us all look like douchebags. Give Tennessee credit for a great game, be proud we won with JJ in foul trouble, stop bashing a great team like MSU, enjoy the win.

Not sure if I would be mentioning Florida as a strength in your schedule. Also, not sure if I would be quoting Rich Rodriguez. Looking forward to watching MSU play UNC and Texas. Purdue still has number 8 West Virginia on their schedule. Beating Gonzaga by 4 points at home sure does not seem like the way a number 2 team in the country should be playing. As you said, only time will tell. Can't wait for big ten play to start up! Boiler up!

People, we shall see. To say that State's team was better last year than this year is a stretch to
argue a point. I believe you will see Korie Lucious prove what I am talking about. I watch a lot
of college basketball games, including the Purdue vrs. Tennessee game last night. Gonzaga should
and will be ranked. There are so many flaws with a pre and early season ranking, as we saw
with Syracuse (24) beating UNC (4). Take a look at Strength of Schedule. Tennessee came a shot
away from winning that game last night, and if they would have elected to drive to the basket on
the last play, they would have, as they had been very successful doing so. Yes, I am a Spartan fan
since I was a kid, and we shall see how things play out.

The SEC does stink, though. We can use the same argument here the SEC folks try to use in the bowl games. Tennessee was the top SEC team, but Purdue was not the top Big Ten team. So Tennessee SHOULD have won. It didn't.

The SEC already has lost to Wofford, Missouri State, and Rider this year. Kentucky has struggled against subpar opponents. Without a doubt, the SEC is the worst major conference in the NCAA this season, just as it was last season.

Winstar Industry, I'm sorry, but Korie Lucious is not "the other best point guard in the NCAA." I'm all for rooting for your team, but lets be realistic. Look around you. Watch some basketball other than the Spartans. (I'm from East Lansing, I like the Spartans, but grew up a Purdue fan). LCM21 is right - you're explanations of MSU's players are terrible. They are all good together; they aren't all all-stars. Get over yourself.

Wow, Winstar Industry, you really took that one little comment by "Brian" and ran away with it. No one is questioning that MSU is a good/great team, but to name each player and give your prediction of each, other than the stat of back-to-back doubles, was ridiculous. All your "up and coming" "developing big man"....blah, blah, blah. Purdue played without their starting speedy point guard and Jujuan, who you give props to, only played 18 minutes due to fouls (that game was poorly called all around...neither team could play without getting called for breathing). Purdue also has a lot of young players developing and "in the pipe". I don't endorse Purdue, just saying as a fan.

Great win purdue! congratulations! Living in kentucky im so sick of hearing about SEC basketball especially UK, but its what i get for living there. Okay reality check folks- SEC has the best football conference, I will give you all that but, not the best sports! Big East, ACC, and Big Ten are far better than the SEC. Good luck to the Vols the rest of the season though please beat UK for me in EVERY SPORT! And Florida too!

You know, Brian, I am finding that PU basketball fans are becoming very similar to OSU football
fans in annoying and idiotic fashion. Purdue is a good team, I give you that, but beat up
on the Spartans? Incidentally, all you PU fans, Tennessee couldn't hit a perimeter shot in the second
half to save it's life, and Tennesse was still in that game to the end. Face reality before you start
spouting about beating up on the Spartans. By the way, this is what you "think" you are going to
    beat up on.

Kalin Lucas-the best point guard in the NCAA, period.
Raymar Morgan-one of the strongest power forwards in the NCAA.
Durrell Summers-the future Superman who dunked over Stanley Robinson in the Final Four.
(psss, where was your team, oh yeah, back in Indiana during the Final Four.)
    Chris Allen-sharpshooter extraordinare.
Delvon Roe-up and coming big man with 2 back-to-back double doubles.
Korie Lucious-the other best point guard in the NCAA.
Draymond Green-multi-talented inside and outside man.
    Derrick Nix-developing big man.
plus a slew of other developing, dangerous players and future recruits in the pipe.

Who do you have? The Kramer Flopper? Robbie Hummer, I mean Hummel.
The only player you have is Jajuan Johnson, I give you props for that.

Who is PU playing over the next few weeks.
MSU is playing Florida, UNC and Texas.

In the words of Rich Rodriguez, "get a life!"

The season is young. Great things will happen for both teams. I think this was one of the best games I have seen so far. Good luck to both teams, maybe they will meet in the tourney for an encore.

Bruce Pearl need to know that a time out left at the end of a game is not the sameas "roll-over minutes" .With 15sec left down by 1 and the best you can do is a 25-30ft shot vs driving down the lane???
What would the coach Roy Williams ,Pinto, any other great coaches have done????Maybe call a time-out and set a play rather than a back-yard pick-up game.
It's a good show to slam a dunk and act like the hulk but it would have been nice if
Tyler would have made a lay-up late in the game and boys, dont get beat down court of a lay-up late in the game.

    Tean effort c+

Great win by the Boilers. When you factor in that they played without their starting point guard, and got very little out of their starting center (who continues his unpleasant trend of disappearing in big games against big men) it's amazing that they won. Looks like a great season ahead.

Kramer's AMAZING 20' slide-steal, in case you hadn't seen it....since Sportcenter is retarded and only shows dunks, not good bball.

Yes, this was a great, intensely fought game. Purdue was favored by one point = their margin of victory, so the "experts' were on the money. Unfortunately, once again the refs thought everyone came to hear their whistles; why can't they just let the kids play?

Great game by both teams. Nice to see an early season game between ranked teams live up to its billing. Only problem with being ranked, however, is it brings the douchey supporters out of the woodwork. Go Boilers.
