North Carolina coach Roy Williams needed to replace four starters from last season’s national championship team - something that has been obvious so far.

The 11-ranked Tar Heels try to bounce back from their first defeat when they host Gardner-Webb on Monday night.

North Carolina (4-1) has been inconsistent early this season after the departures of Tyler Hansbrough, Wayne Ellington, Ty Lawson and Danny Green. The current Tar Heels are led by seniors Deon Thompson, the lone remaining starter from last season, and Marcus Ginyard, who missed most of 2009-10 with a stress fracture in his left foot.

The lack of experience has been evident. In the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic on Friday, North Carolina looked strong in the first half against Syracuse, but fell apart down the stretch and lost 87-71.

The Tar Heels, who opened last season with 13 consecutive wins, led 39-37 at halftime but allowed the Orange to go on a 22-1 run to open the second half.

It wasn’t the first time North Carolina came unraveled after the break.

In Thursday’s semifinal game against then-No. 15 Ohio State, the Tar Heels allowed the Buckeyes to trim a 19-point second-half lead to two with 11 seconds left before holding on for a 77-73 win.

“It’s frustrating, no question about that,” Williams said. “We’ve got to play better.”

One of the few bright spots for North Carolina in the loss was another solid offensive performance from Ed Davis.

The sophomore forward finished with 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting and is averaging 11.6 points on 75.9 percent from the field (22 of 29).

While Davis played well, Thompson had a season-low 11 points and junior forward Will Graves scored eight on 2-of-12 shooting.

The Tar Heels hope to get back on track at the Smith Center, where they have won 32 straight non-conference games since a 68-64 loss to then-No. 12 Illinois on Nov. 29, 2005. One of the victories in that stretch was a 103-50 win over Gardner-Webb on Nov. 19, 2006, the last meeting between the schools.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs, 0-2 against North Carolina, are coming off Saturday’s 83-58 win over Methodist.

Gardner-Webb (3-0) outscored its first three opponents by an average of 31.0 points, but the Bulldogs will be facing their first Division I opponent of the season in the matchup at the Smith Center. Gardner-Webb lost its last two games against ranked opponents after beating then-No. 20 Kentucky 84-68 on Nov. 7, 2007, and was 1-7 on the road in non-conference games last season.

Sophomore forward Josh Henley had a breakout offensive performance Saturday, finishing with a career-high 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting. Henley, who added 13 rebounds, totaled five points in his first two games.

im a unc fan and i hate to hear the crap from the duke fans too but being realistic duke should be a better team than us this year and we got nobody that can guard on the point were to big and slow to match up with not only theyre guards but any good guards for that matter now im not saying we cant anything can happen but id be surprised if we beat michigan st texas or kentucky you can bet wall cant wait to play us id like to see us win them all but sometimes you got to keep it real and if we cant win it all id rather see duke win it or another acc team rather than someone else go unc

#36 I can see the problems on the perimeter. But theres only a few teams in the country that can put the talent on the floor UNC can.Its a long way off it seems but after they get a big win against Mich ST OR Ky., youll see a more confident group.Drew has the ability and Strickland isnt a pure point.Sweet Sixteen definitely.Later this year remember the name "John Henson" .He will be a difference maker. You cant duplicate what they did last year. That was the best college team in a long time.

Bobby B ... I hope the Heels gel and come togehter as a unit...I'm a true fan...I'm just not buying
into Drew-2 and see little hope for a perimeter game wiht this team...The only way I see this team
going deep into March is for Roy to completely change the style of play to a much slower style and
for this team to play absolute lock down DEFENSE...I don't think either will happen...Roy will not
change the pace and I don't see this team developing into a perimeter defense with so many bigs
on the roster...Hey, tell me we're going to the sweet 16 with this team and we're going to bag 28
wins or so and I'll be a happy heel!
I just don't see it...I'll take it, but don't see it...too many issues surrounding guard and perimeter
    play!

And Holt-Donnie,true Tarheel fans know how in reloading years they always struggle early with a tough schedule and then are one of the favorites come March. That is the reality here.Sure its hard to repeat but nobody expects to repeat. But I dont see any dominant teams like UNC last year.So they have as much chance as anybody if they improve like I know they will.

Baby attitudes?Whining? Dookies are a unique group. They actually are the people doing those very same things that they say UNC fans are doing. Its so pathetic hearing how UNC is finished and we have no chance to win and Syracuse blew us out and so-on.The fact of the matter of it is.Carolina are the current champions and until someone changes that, we will still be the champs.Dook beats these patsies every year and by Feb. when UNC comes calling, the season goes to hell for them.Yes I know they won that ACC tourny ,without Ty Lawson playing of course, but that was it.There will probably not be a repeat of the title for UNC, but stranger things have happened. But if I were a DOOK fan, Id shut my piehole until you play someone to judge your team by.Remember the name John Henson. He is going to be a BIG factor as Roy is bringing him along slowly.Once Roy gets his 8 man rotation set, thats when well see what they are made of.

Heels Fans...Get over the baby attitudes...we had it handed to us in the second half by Syracuse...Just like we handed it to everybody in the NCAA last year!! I promise this is not
the last time that we'll gat hosed this year...We are facing a long season as Tar Heel fans...I don't
know about you guys but I'll still be a Tar Heel fan when it's over!

For all the dook fan that are celebrating the Heels loss...You guys have some beatings coming your
way once the ACC gets going...we''ll have to wait until then because you guys will not actually play
    a ranked team until then.

Heels 68...I think you have questioned the gramar of the wrong person here...I'm simply stating
the obvious...I'm not in a fantasy basketball world...When you lose the talent that Roy lost from
a National Championship team, this type of drop off can be expected...I don't think it's impossible
to be a fan and realistic at the same time..are you going to freak out when this team loses double
    digit games?

Why do some Tar Heel fans find it so hard to be realistic ? Enjoy the fact that we won it all last year
and keep your expectations in check with this team...this is not the same team that won it all last
year...TRUE Tar Heel fans are smart enough to exept that and move on!

    @Jeff

Your ignorance and lack of knowledge of your own team doesn't surprise me with statements like these

"Syracuse pretty much has all seniors and juniors because their players arent good enough to get drafted"
-AO, Rick J, Andy R, Wes J (transfer) are the only juniors and seniors we have on this team. Not to mention Flynn, harris, and devendork left for the NBA with flynn going #6 in the draft. So much for not having NBA talent. LMAO
"Come March the 'Heels will be right where they belong. Heading deep into the tournament. If not winning it."
Lets see here... You beat a 15th ranked ohio state squad (barely) and you lose to an underrated syracuse team. If your team was so "young" and "inexperienced", how did you manage to pull off a W against a 15th ranked squad? Enough of that bullcrap. Syracuse will be a top 5 contender all year this year. It's early in the year but how they blew out you and Cal by a solid 15 points or more is great.

By the way, we have another lottery pick on our team. His name is Wesley Johnson, get to know him ;)

Heels 68: Darn right it's a tough schedule. Tougher than say Florida International, North Carolina Central, Garner-Webb (oh wait, we play them too). They really did try hard to get Durham High School on their schedule, but the open dates just didn't work out.

I think Barnes is going to UNC. I'm sure that's going to make you a better team THIS year.

Where is that Hansbrough kid going to school? Oh wait, he's not in school is he. Nor is Lawson, etc. Guess we're going to have to rename Cameron "Drew II Indoor".

lol I love how some of you guys are talking about Cuse being a crap team, they always have a solid squad. Carolina is composed of all freshmen, one sophomore in Davis and two seniors (I do not count Zellar/Drew as sophomores because they got NO play time last year). Against any good experienced team Carolina will struggle without a doubt. Will they get better by the end of the season to beat Duke both times? I dont know I hope so but I doubt it...if they do win it will only be in the Dome.

Dukes team this year is no different than last year, the only thing missing is Paulus and Henderson. Other than that its pretty much the same squad...who is experienced.

I dont know maybe I am one of the few people who think experienced is needed and the whole "we have been playing our whole life" excuse is bull@#$%....high school is drastically different than college.

Umm, Duke's record against Carolina is 0-0. What's your point?
If we need to rely on past years, then I guess in the last two years, Duke has won as many Duke/UNC games in the Dean Dome as UNC has (1-1 if you need a record). I'm sure you'll come up with some equally meaningless stat that somehow is supposed to related to this year.

Just saw a cool thing. I was looking at the latest polls and saw UNC was #12. No, no, wait, that's not the cool thing. The cool thing was that I had to look NORTH to find Duke! Waaaaay North.

Oh I know, I know, Duke hasn't played anyone yet. BUT, they haven't LOST to anyone yet either. *snicker*.

Don't waste posting space with the "we're young, we'll be better by March" mantra, that's already been posted about a bazillion times by UNC fans. I'm dealing with the present. And the present is UNC (5-1) Ranked #12 and DUKE (4-0) Ranked #7 with one first place vote (must be Dickie V). That's the present! Those who have to predict the future are also known as....LOSERS.

Or maybe, just maybe, contrary to UNC fans' opinions BEFORE the Syracuse game, polls don't really mean anything. Naaaaaah, that many UNC fans couldn't be wrong.

I'm a die-hard Carolina fan but, I 'm not sure this team will come together this year in order to make
a serious run in March...this team may not play in March...there is absolutely no perimeter game and
we have no-one who can handle the ball on this level.I was very excited to open up this season and
wish that this team resembled a team that might gel down the road but I'm just no seeing very much
promise...I think when we play smaller teams with less talent we look great in the paint...When we
play someone wiht similar size and talent in the paint we look soft and confused...Love Roy and what
he has done with the program but this will be a humbling experience for the coah and Tar Heel fans
this year...Good news we'll bounce back next year and possibly cut down the nets the following year!

I witnessed a horrible weakness at the foul line and way too many turnovers.
They have a long way to go before blending into a rock solid unit, but I have no
doubt they will do just that.
I have followed Roy Williams' career for +20 yrs and I would rank him right
up there with the Lute Olsons, the Coach Ks, the John Woodens, and the
Jim Boeheims. Believe me, folks, he WILL make this team gel.

ok lets see--unc was overrated (true) and the cuse's win over #13 cal was evidently meaningless so unc should drop out of the polls --ok--i'd like to see that happen so we could go to the final four like we did in 2000 (22-14) it made that run especially fun. polls are fun for unc every year-- how bout the cuse? boheim is great,by the way

After being at the game last night, Carolina was just way too big for G-W on the inside. G-W only played 1 guy at a time on the floor that was over 6-3". UNC's big men ran the floor, for the most part, better than G-W's smaller players (faster and got better position in the transition game). I am not a UNC fan. Watching the game last night, UNC MUST improve on outside shooting and free throw shooting if they want to make a serious run in the NCAA tournament. They put good defensive pressure on the ball, but nobody looked comfortable shooting from outside of 10 feet....not that they needed to do that last night.

I think that Roy is still tinkering with lineups and rotations and games like last night are a great time to see what works, what doesn't, etc.
