Iowa State vs. (1) Kansas

DALLAS (TICKER) —Hoping to secure a top seed in the NCAA Tournament, fourth-ranked Kansas takes on Iowa State in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Conference tournament.

The Wildcats (24-6) enter the Big 12 tournament on a roll, having won four straight and 11 of their last 12. They wrapped up their second straight undisputed Big 12 regular season title with a 79-74 victory at Missouri last weekend.

Kansas has claimed three Big 12 tournament titles, but none since 1999. It is 13-3 in the history of the tournament.

Five players reached double figures in the win over Missouri, led by Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich, who scored 20 points apiece. Collison, who also grabbed 10 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season, needs 46 points to become just the third player in school history to record 2,000 career points.

Kansas swept the season series against Iowa State (16-12), including a 70-51 victory in the last meeting on February 16. The Jayhawks have won four straight against the Cyclones to take a 155-56 lead in the all-time series.

Iowa State dropped a 74-63 decision at Kansas State in its regular-season finale, but advanced in the Big 12 tournament with a 97-70 first-round win over Texas A&M on Thursday.

The Cyclones opened a 31-11 lead midway through the first half and never threatened. Iowa State was eliminated in the first round of the Big 12 tournament the past two years after winning the event in 2000.

Tim Barnes made five 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead five players in double figures for Iowa State.

The winner of Friday’ contest takes on either Texas Tech or Colorado in the semifinals on Saturday.

In the last meeting between Kansas and Iowa State, the Jayhawks shot 53.6 percent from the field. Collison and Hinrich scored 19 points apiece. Point guard Aaron Miles narrowly missed the first official triple-double in Kansas history with 14 points, nine assists and nine steals.
