AMES, IOWA (TICKER) —No. 17 Kansas will be without sophomore forward Wayne Simien when it begins its Big 12 Conference schedule with a visit to Iowa State on Monday.

Simien dislocated his right shoulder in the first half of Saturday’s 100-46 rout of Missouri-Kansas City. It is the same shoulder he hurt in his senior year of high school, an injury that sidelined him for six months.

In his first year as starter, Simien is averaging 17 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest. He is Kansas’ (9-3) leading rebounder and has done a solid job in place of Drew Gooden, who left for the NBA.

The length of Simien’s injury is not known and the leading candidate to replace him is junior college transfer Jeff Graves, who had season highs of 10 points and 12 rebounds Saturday.

Without their leading rebounder, the Jayhawks had little trouble extending their winning streak to six games as Kirk Hinrich scored a career-high 29 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field, including making 7-of-8 shots from 3-point range.

Iowa State (10-1) has won five straight since an 85-78 loss to Boston College on December 10. The streak started with a win over Iowa, but the other wins have been against Savannah State, Drake, Northern Iowa and Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

The Cyclones closed out their non-conference schedule with Tuesday’s 90-46 rout over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Junior guard Jake Sullivan scored 19 points and became the 22nd player in school history to reach 1,000 points with a 3-pointer early in the second half.

If Iowa State can beat the defending Big 12 champions it will match its second-best start in school history. The Cyclones began 1994-95 and 1996-97 with 11-1 records.

Their best start is 13-1 in 2000-01.

Under coach Larry Eustachy, the Cyclones are 5-3 vs. Kansas. He is the only active Big 12 coach with a winning record against the Jayhawks.

Last season, the Jayhawks posted an 88-81 win here on January 23 as Iowa natives Nick Collison and Hinrich got their first win in their home states. Collison collected 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Hinrich finished with 12 points and nine assists.
