Yahoo! Contributor NetworkKentucky fan’s take: Four reasons why John Calipari is always rumored to go to the NBA
Every April, there are rumors about NBA coaching moves. These rumors usually involve Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari. It is annoying but it would be worse for Kentucky to have a coach nobody wanted. A year ago, the Chicago Bulls were said to be interested. At the time, Calipari said he never wanted to leave. This year, it is the New York Knicks (and others) who are said to be interested.
Calipari will always be mentioned as a candidate to jump to an NBA job for four reasons.
Here they are:
1. He's a great coach
In the last six seasons, Coach Cal has one Sweet Sixteen, three Elite Eights, a Final Four, and one tournament runner up. At Kentucky, he has won two SEC Tournament titles and compiled a 64-12 record. He has taken three programs to the Final Four.
That should say it all but he also out-coached Thad Matta and Roy Williams in the NCAA Tournament this year. They could have won it all if they made a three at the end of the Final Four game. Overall, he did a fantastic job with this year's team. They were not expected to make it to the Final Four after losing five players.
2. He's coached in the NBA before
Way back in 1996, the New Jersey Nets hired Calipari to be their new head coach. He coached there for three years and finished with a 72-112 record. He did make it to the playoffs in his second season, though.
NBA owners tend to hire guys that have had been there before.
3. His opponents want to hurt him in recruiting as much as possible
Calipari is highly regarded as a recruiter. Cal's foes know that he will continue to pull in top tier talent to attend Kentucky. Their best chance to stop this is to put doubts in the minds of these young men. Circulating rumors about Cal leaving Kentucky is good for them.
4. Coach Cal's agent
Calipari's agent is Williams "Worldwide Wes" Wesley. Wesley works for Creative Artists Agency and has numerous ties to many NBA players including LeBron James, Chris Paul, and some NBA owners. There are even rumblings about Wesley's access to recruits. It isn't a giant leap to think that Wesley could be working on Coach Cal's next NBA gig.
What others are saying
Dick Vitale recently tweeted this: "No way @UKCoachCalipari leaves Kentucky 4 NBA- he needs to do is call Mr Pitino. Worse coaching move -he would be HoFer & have Coach K #'s!"
John Wall was quoted saying this: "If he makes that decision, that would be good, but I think he will stay at Kentucky," Wall said. "That was his dream job. The Big Blue Nation is a crowd that really love college basketball; they're the best fans I have been around. They love him there."
As I said here, Cal won't leave Kentucky.
