For the second time in the [db]Bill Self[/db] era, Kansas men’s basketball is No. 1 according to the ESPN/USA Today Preseason Coaches’ Poll released Thursday.

Kansas received 27 first-place votes in garnering top preseason honors for the third time in school history and the first since the 2004-05 season. KU was also No. 1 in the 1996-97 according to the coaches.

KU returns its top nine scorers, including all five starters, and more than 94 percent in every statistical category form last season’s 27-8 team which won its fifth straight, ninth Big 12 and NCAA-leading 52nd conference regular-season title with a 14-2 record. The 2008-09 Jayhawks advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 and return 12 letterwinners.

“I’m not really surprised because a lot of people have said all along we would be here,” said Self, the 2006 and 2009 Big 12 Coach of the Year who was consensus national coach of the year following last season. “This is a reflection of last year’s performance, who you return and who you recruited from a projection standpoint. We return good players and have a nice recruiting class. I can see us being rated that high, but I hope our guys understand preseason rankings do not mean a lot and it should be our effort to try and play to that ranking each and every day we come out to practice.”

Following Kansas in the coaches’ poll was Michigan State who received three first-place votes. Texas was third followed by No. 4 North Carolina and No. 5 Kentucky.

This marks the eighth time in the last 10 seasons that KU has entered the coaches’ preseason poll ranked seventh or higher. Since 1993, this is the 13th time Kansas enters the coaches’ preseason poll ranked ninth or higher.

Kansas will face five teams - No. 3 Texas, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 12 California, No. 15 Michigan and No. 16 Oklahoma - that in the ESPN/USA Today Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

Quoting Bill Self:

On comparing the 2004-05 Preseason No. 1 Team to the 2009-10 Team

“That was a tired team that fizzled late. This team is more talented, deeper and probably has more margin for error than that team. But that team had some great leaders with Aaron (Miles), Wayne (Simien), Keith (Langford) and Michael (Lee) and I have yet to see that leadership except from Sherron (Collins) and Cole (Aldrich). We got to have some young guys step up.”

On the pressure of being No. 1

“I almost hope there is pressure because I hope they realize that if they are not their best every day and try to get better each and every day, someone else has our game circled on their schedule. I hope we don’t have to be taught a lot of valuable lessons.”

On Kansas’ progress in practice since Oct. 16

“The team is not the same team as last year right now. We’ve got to improve from a maturity standpoint in so many areas and get to the point we practice at a consistent high level. I think this team feels they can turn it on when they want to and that obviously is not the case and that will be a tough lesson to learn if we don’t pick it up from an intensity standpoint.”

Nice breakdown there Dookie. I agree mostly with what u are saying so saves me some typing haha. Also i have to agree with Self, being a KU student and having watched the boys practice this pre-season, I am a little worried about us gettin our sh*t together before the season starts. We do seem to need to buckle down and focus, practice harder, and go hard all the time or we will not be taking home the ship this year. I'm sure Self will get the boys in shape though, least im hoping cuz another week long party would rock haha and bragging rights are always sweet.

Sorry about the double post. Yahoo! told me "Comment could not be posted" so I tried again. Apparently the comment COULD be posted and was. Wasn't trying to be rude.

Not bad. Kansas as #1 -- well duhhhhh. Like UNC last year, this is Kansas' year to lose. They do have Michigan, Tennessee and Cal fairly early (earlier the better for such an experienced team) but beyond that, not much to stop them. #1 is absolutely right there. Michigan State at #2 is probably a pretty solid selection as well.

Being an old Dookie, I do know a bit about the ACC and there are a few iffy placements there. UNC as #4? Why not. Really who knows. On paper they look really good (#4 though). Will they gel as a team? How will the young guys handle their first road games in the ACC? Who knows. Kind of hard to accept a #4 spot for a team that is right now "on paper". Maybe they will be great. Who knows.

Duke at #8. Again why now, but could be a bit high. Coach K is pretty consistent. A team with a superstar or two, Final Fours and National Championships. A team with just good players, 25 or so wins and a couple rounds in the NCAA. This year seems to be a team with just good players. So top 16 - absolutely. #8? Again, why not. Will just have to see what he does with a very different type of team than he has had. (good, not great big bodies, thin in the backcourt...not a typical Duke team).

Georgia Tech #20 - Not much to say there. Could be about right. But they will be one good win from higher rankings or one bad loss from out of the top 25.

The biggest mistake IMHO is Clemson at #24. Purnell's a good coach and has them going in the right direction. With Booker, I really think this is the year they break in with the big boys. Don't be surprised to find Clemson a bit higher than #24 come March.
