UCLA’s Dragovic reinstated after 2-game suspension

LOS ANGELES (AP)—UCLA reinstated Nikola Dragovic on Wednesday after the Serbian forward’s two-game suspension for his arrest in an assault case.

Coach Ben Howland cleared the 21-year-old senior to practice with the Bruins on Wednesday, and said he’ll play in Thursday’s 76 Classic opener in Anaheim against Portland.

“Based on the information we have right now and what we know about the situation, I sat down with (athletic director) Dan (Guerrero) and we’ve been discussing this,” Howland said. “We just felt like he’s been suspended for the two games, and based on what we know right now, it would be the right decision to let him play.”

Dragovic hasn’t been practicing with the Bruins since he was suspended last Friday. He missed games against Cal State Bakersfield and Pepperdine.

Howland said Dragovic won’t yet reclaim his spot from James Keefe in the Bruins’ starting lineup. Dragovic is the Bruins’ only returning starter this fall.

Dragovic’s lawyer, Jon Artz, said his client will plead not guilty after being arrested last week on a felony warrant which alleges Dragovic knocked a man into a glass case during a concert in Hollywood.

Artz says the other man was the aggressor, was drinking heavily and had slapped Dragovic’s roommate. He claims Dragovic attempted to leave, but was followed from the third floor of the theater by the man, who said he had a knife and threatened to kill Dragovic.

“We’re pretty confident that once we show what happened upstairs, the spin in this case that Nikola was the bad guy will take a different spin,” Artz said.

Dragovic voluntarily filed a report with campus police a week after the incident, and believed the incident had been written off as a minor scuffle. He was “unpleasantly surprised” to be arrested the following month, Artz said.

Dragovic also was suspended for one game last season on suspicion of pushing his former live-in girlfriend to the ground during a dispute. He was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor battery, and though prosecutors decided not to file charges, Howland said the incident would be taken into account in determining Dragovic’s punishment.

Artz said Dragovic’s arraignment is scheduled for Dec. 21.

Jason, Just for you know UCLA finally "beat" Portland by only -27 points.
Howland is a great coach. Without coach Howland UCLA may "beat" Portland by -40 points. We expect to see a "great" UCLA basketball team leaded by Ben Howland in this 2009-2010 season.

It is time for Ben Howland going home.
I can't think of any excuse for Howland in this 2009 season.

What a great coach Howland? He leads UCLA beat Portland by -30 points. 10 mins to go in this second half. Kobe and Brian are suck, but I believe Howland and people in this forum are not better than Kobe and Brian. kakaka....

    I totally agree with Brian.
UCLA lost the first game, struggled in the second and third game, then played shamefully in the fourth game. What can you say about this UCLA team leading by a 4 NCAA final four coach that can't recruite a better team after all the player departed for NBA? Fire them please and lower UCLA student tuition.

UCLA basketball team can't go anywhere until this team is terminated including Ben Howland and a new team is recruited from Washington or Arizona. By looking at UCLA, USC, CAL, Stanford, no californian can play good basketball. Don't waste your money on these people and bankrupt your state. Wake up...khakhakha

Wowerz at the dummies posting and saying Ucla has young players, wtf do u think has been there the last 4 yrs...everyone leaves after there sophomore season lol! Even still Coach Howland has terrific talent, and he needs to actually coach them. The money he is paid to teach them, if they do not make a the NCAA tourney, would be a shame. Do not under estimate these guys, it is the COACHING, trust me.

Man, you Bruin folks crack me up. You lose a game at the start of a rebuilding season against a CS school and literally go into beserk mode. Get a grip! It's happened before (remember losing to CSUN?) and, like it or not, it'll happen again. Geez, you guys are so friggin' arrogant and full of it ... Look guys and gals, relax and take a deep breath, and repeat after me ... UCLA will be back! Those calling for Howland's firing know very little about basketball ... Now get real!

We in Bruinsnation, (I'm not talkin about the Communist Ben Howland ballwashers who stole that domain name to do a Ben-Worship Site) stolen from TRUE BLUE HARD CORE UCLA BRUINS... let me make this clear... the regular season is nothing more than a tune-up to the Big Dance!

As a proper tune up... we should be gapping sorry programs by 30+ points... and strong programs by no less than 8 points. Thanks to Howland, our own team celebrates beating loser teams because they don't EXPECT to blow anybody out! Shameful!

    Howland is on the clock.
Dude is way too smug, like he's actually DONE something.
I'll tell you what's he's done... NO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!

    Whata loser.

Howland should NEVER have a bare cupboard at UCLA! NEVER!
Team should be LOADED and RELOADED with STUDS!
UCLA should lead the nation in NBA picks... with more to replace.
Nobody has a richer basketball history.
Have you ever BEEN to the UCLA Campus? Beautiful.
    Women FOREVER.
    Celebraties FOREVER.
What? Even freaking SHAKIRA found time to Michael Jackson MASK herself to take classes - where?
    Howland is ON THE CLOCK!
If we've seen his best coaching (and I think we have),
then we're in for decent seasons... then gettin out azz taken to school by REAL TEAMS
that bounce us the F outta the dance! Always gettin our AZZ's kicked when it counts the most!
F going to the dance. We're UCLA. We go to WIN the dance!
Howland is on the clock. That loser! Go Bruins!

Fire Howland? And get whom? Anyone who thinks Howland should be fired should start cheering for another team. Freakin idiots!

Having said that, I DO agree that losing to CSUF and being down 12 to CSUB is inexcusable. Down year or not, any 5 UCLA recruits should beat any 5 CSU recruits any day of the week, and there is simply no acceptable excuse to losing to them.

Howland will get these kids together, and they will be playing well by year end, I guarantee it. I'd even bet we don't get blown out by KU -- I'm not ready to call a win, but I bet we keep it in double digits. I'm not basing that on how we've been playing, mind you. Rather, I'm basing it on our coach, who is one of the best in the business!

    Go Bruins!

I just wanted "Kobe" and "Brian" down there to know that you can now find your posts here on Engrish.com. Check it out. You'll find the whole site very familiar and easy to read.

UCLA had a great core of players that Coach Howland took to 3 Final Fours, as stated previously. With Westbrook, Shipp, Mbah a Moute, Aboya, and most importantly Collison having moved on, UCLA is in full rebuild mode. There are only FIVE upperclassmen on the entire roster this year!

Howland will develop good young players like Malcolm Lee into great ones while he continues to recruit, and UCLA will continue its long tradition of championship-caliber basketball. A relatively "down" year ahead, perhaps - but not for long.

    Go Bruins!

Brian and Kobe clearly did not make it past middle school! Try using a few more words to actually complete a sentence! UCLA will work it out and end up with a 20 win season with Holland at the helm. This guy is solid and you s@%t bags who call for Holland to be fired are clearly retarded!

    @boasocal,
if you think 'nova had less to work with, you're an ignorant fool! they've consistently had top recruits and last year they had FIVE RETURNING STARTERS!
a lot less? don't think so.
and for all your talk about how much more he's done, wright's only brought the team to ONE final four. Correct me if I'm wrong, but 3 is greater than 1, is it not?
check the facts before you post crap like yours

Jay Wright beat this brilliant coach's brains out by 20 in last year's NCAA tourney. UCLA is overrated as usual by most of you. John Wooden isn't around any longer, get used to it. U Can Lose Again...overrated, overrated, overatted as usual. If Howland is 2nd to Coach K, what does that make Jay Wright who wins as much or more with A LOT LESS. UCLA was crushed by 'Nova.

Did any of you drooling fools see how Collison is taking over for CP3 and now New Orleans is winning? Tell me Howland can't coach. Holiday was a money hungry fool. He's sitting on the end of an NBA bench when he should be leading this team. This current team will be competitive and will go to the dance. Grow up.

LOL Why are you guys even listening to the first comment or the other silly comments?

Howland took UCLA to 3 straight Final Fours and brings in constant top 10 recruiting classes.

Whoever says Howland should be fired is a trojan fan or jealous of UCLA (Arizona fans, Sc fans......the WHOLE PAC-10)

It will be a down season, but we are the most talented YOUNG team in America...and have a chance for a potential National Championship run the following season.

    GO BRUINS!!!!!

I can't believe you guys have even seen a bb game. Howland has a cubbard full of very young players. They are not going to be like the last few years, but if these players stick around they will make a very good team with Howlands coaching. Go back to watching cartoons.

Fire him for losing a little bit? You guys haven't seen what Ben Howland has done. Just because he starts off a season slow, and has less production than before doesn't mean he deserves to get fired. Don't even call yourself a fan unless you stay with the team through thick and thin.
