Richardson leads Illinois past Quincy

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP)—Freshman D.J. Richardson scored 23 points and No. 23 Illinois overcame a sluggish start to beat Quincy 84-63 in an exhibition game Sunday.

Illinois trailed the Division II school until a 3-pointer by freshman Brandon Paul with 6:03 left in the first half put the Illini ahead 25-22. Paul finished with 11 points.

The win didn’t come as easily as the score indicated with Quincy sticking with Illinois until a 3-pointer by Bill Cole extended the lead to 14 with 4:39 left in the game.

Richardson hit 9 of 13 shots, including five 3-pointers. He also had four assists and four rebounds.

Andrew Keuker led Quincy with 16 points on 5 of 6 shooting.

The Illini open the season against SIU-Edwardsville on Friday.

If you're a senior in a major college program, you're not that good or you would be in the pro's either here or overseas! Even Hansbrough and Reddick are no names in the pros!

The Big 10 will be very solid once again this year. I anxiously await the Big 10/ACC challenge this year, because the ACC will finally get smacked around. As an Illinois fan, we will definitely place high in the Big 10 this season. Going back with the 3 guard line-up will quicken the tempo and hopefully put more fast break points on the board. Also, as good as Illinois will be this season, next season will be even better because of the 3 big name recruits, and the fact that we dont lose anybody to graduation. Davis, Tisdale, and McCamey will all be Seniors, and Richardson, Paul, and Bertrand will all have one year under there belt. Hopefully, the Illini have worked out all their recruiting flaws of the past, and will be able to get the big name players in the future.

I will say Illinois is a good team. They should finish third in the Big Ten and will be a #5 seed in the NCAA tournament and should make it to the sweet sixteen. By the way newobit, MSU's star player is Kalin Lucas, the Big Ten preseason POY. Not to mention they have one of, if not the best, backcourt in the nation with Lucas, Durrell Summers, Chris Allen and Korie Lucious. They also have a pretty good frontcourt with Delvon Roe and Raymar Morgan with a couple of good freshman 6-10 centers to back them up. Sure you guys have Mike Tisdale and Mike Davis down low and McCamey and Legion up top, but you guys don't have the depth that MSU has.

I'm Illini fan too. I truly think this is going to be a great year for the Big 10, with Illinois, MSU and Purdue leading the way. Personally, I think Purdue has the best team in the Big 10 for now. They have 3 potential pro players in Hummel, Johnson and Moore. I still believe that Illinois will be a force to be reckon with, once they learn how to play with one another. Still, I just ask Big 10 Nation to stick together, because sooner or later, those ESPN knuckleheads will be slamming the Big 10 and giving the praises to the ACC. I do not even listen to ESPN analysts no more when it comes to college baskeball. J H Out!

Speaking as an Illini fan, don't listen (too much) to newobit. He's been drinking the kool-aid. MSU is a great team and I'll be happy with a split this year as my Illini work to blend several freshmen into the mix.

    Go Illini!

I didn't mean Hummel of course , he is with Purdue... but WHO Ever MSU's big gun is. ( no one knows who). they are destined for no better than 4th place. Hummel by the way IS over rated still. Another Mateen CLeeves!!! haha big 10 player of the year twice .. averaged 9 points a game and was Big ten player of year. and was a complete wash out in the NBA like the whole country knew he would be. .. sad sack Cleeves.. What a joke he was.

MSU will not come within 10 points of this Illini team. RIchardson and Paul and Joseph Bertrand , ALL freshman would be superstars on any other team. THey will all play and Richardson and Paul will start.. With 7 foot 2 in the paint ( Tisdale) who can also shoot 3's and McCamey at the other guard and Davis and at the other forward we still have a deep bench after that. Illinois will win the Big 10 and MSU and their horribly over rated Robbie Hummel who disappears when the going gets tough will be a distant 4th. ..
