Wall goes for 27 as No. 4 Kentucky routs Clarion

  • Print

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP)—John Wall proved to be worth the wait.

The heralded Kentucky freshman scored 27 points in his collegiate debut as the fourth-ranked Wildcats rolled past Clarion 117-52 on Friday night in an exhibition game.

“I asked him, ‘Is that your ‘A’ game?”’ Kentucky coach John Calipari said. “He was pretty good.”

Maybe even better than advertised after Wall was forced to sit out Kentucky’s exhibition opener on Monday as part of an NCAA suspension for accepting improper benefits from his former AAU coach.

He didn’t waste any time getting comfortable against the Golden Eagles, an NCAA Division II school in western Pennsylvania.

Wall nearly outscored Clarion in the first half and showcased a little bit of everything, from a dunk to a 3-pointer to a nifty behind-the-back dribble for a layup.

“He’s the real deal,” Clarion coach Ron Righter said. “I hope (Kentucky) can keep him because he’s in another league.”

Wall’s teammates weren’t too bad either.

DeMarcus Cousins added 20 points, Patrick Patterson scored 14 and Darius Miller, Darnell Dodson and Ramon Harris had 11 apiece for Kentucky, which played with the kind of electricity lacking during a somewhat sloppy victory over Campbellsville on Monday.

Wall watched that game from the bench, clad in gray sweatpants. He looked more comfortable in a white jersey, running Calipari’s “dribble drive” offense.

“College is just like high school,” Wall said. “It’s not a one-man show here. I’ve got Kentucky across my chest and so does everybody else.”

Mike Sherry led Clarion with 11 points. The Golden Eagles presented Calipari, who played guard for the school from 1979-1982, with two replica jerseys before the game.

The Wildcats didn’t exactly return the favor.

Wall received a rousing ovation when introduced with the starters and didn’t take long to start showcasing some of talent that has some experts predicting his time with the Wildcats will be short.

He hit a 3-pointer in the opening minutes—not bad for a player whose shooting stroke is seemingly the only question mark in his game—and proved nearly unstoppable with the ball in his hands in the new offense being installed by Calipari.

For all the explosiveness Wall showed, what impressed Calipari most about his new star was his willingness to get his teammates involved. Wall finished with nine assists and could have had a handful more if he’d kept his head up for a cutting teammate.

“He’d come out and I’d come over to him and he’d already know (what I was going to say),” Calipari said. “Sometimes he was a little too fast.”

It’s a problem Calipari and the Wildcats can live with if they continue to play with the electricity they showed in front of a standing room only crowd only too eager to see Wall-mania lift off.

The Wildcats did whatever they wanted whenever they wanted, shooting 59 percent from the field, making 25 of 30 free throws and knocking down eight 3-pointers.

“That’s as talented a team, in his system, this early in the season as I’ve seen,” Righter said.

And the Wildcats played without their other lightning quick freshman, as Eric Bledsoe sat out with an ankle injury. Freshman forward Daniel Orton left the game early with chest soreness and is listed as day-to-day.

Calipari hopes both players will be ready for next week’s season opener against Morehead State. Wall will be on the sidelines again serving out the remainder of his NCAA suspension.

“It’s going to be tough to sit down, but I’m happy to have it behind me,” Wall said.

#62,#63....Both of you are right on...Don't forget about the tarheels,Not that it didn't make me throw up in my mouth to say that, But I have to say ROY WILLIAMS is the Best coach in the country, If any of these coaches stayed at 1 school for 30 years like you know who...They would all have 3 titles or more..WILLIAMS,PATINO,SELF,DONAVAN,CALIPARI,BARNS....the only reason you know who stays at you know where is because he has worked hard to get the NCAA in his pocket, I wouldn't want to give that up either.....That said, Guys, I have seen many talented teams not make it to the promised land... I have seen more experiences teams with great talent not cut down the nets, we all have, I don't see my KENTUCKY WILDCATS doing it this year either..But guess what all you HATERS we're BAAAACK!!! And all the teams chasing our NCAA leading #'s had your chance...Even If CAL is one and done.. I think the UK higher ups Have learned a valueble lesson in getting a drunk as coach...They see what a true STAR recruiter can bring in here...NOW it is up to CAL to Take them the TOP.. If he don't somebody will Y......WE ARE KENTUCKY!!!!!!!!GO BIG BLUE!!!!!

OK fans, fast-forward this BS several months from now. Whether Kentucky goes to the NCAA's and wins or loses. Wall will leave for the NBA, Calapari is filthy rich, and Kentucky will be hit by the NCAA with everything but the kitchen sink. Every fan will have egg on their faces and the cycle will repeat itself. Wall will be rich and squander it ASAP. Calapari will remain rich forever. Kentucky will look like every other school that has hired Calapari, foolish.

Will we ever get enough of this crap? Whose listening, anybody?

Whose the President of the University? Calapari or some dumb ex-jock who just wants another NCAA crown.

Not so fast my friends!!! While everybody is hyping up teams like Kentucky.. new coach/ new system or a MSU team... got thrashed in the National championship game... Keep your eyes on the Tar heels. yeah they lost four top players to the NBA, but Roy Williams doesnt rebuild.. he reloads. Do you remember the 05-06 season when people had Carolina not making the Tourney... they went on to the 2nd round. Not bad for a team that lost 98.5 percent of the scoring and rebounding from the previous year. So go ahead and kiss up to Calipari who hasnt even won a national championship.. but imma stick with my beloved tarheels... Back to Back does sound nice! See you in INdy!

It's so sad that there are so many UK haters out there. That's why I must set you all straight. There is only one team with more NCAA Championships (UCLA), NO team with more wins and tradition is stronger no where else. SEC foes beware because you already know the deal. When the BIG BLUE rolls over your team don't cry or complain just acknowledge true greatness. No team is perfect but KENTUCKY should win it all this year as long as injuries don't slow them down. P.S. watch for WVU also they will be good this year. In the mean time STOP HATIN'!!!!!!!!!!

    # 56, I never said we were the favorite, and I don't think we are anyway. Even if UConn was #1, I still would think Kansas is favored to win it. Anyways the polls don't mean S*** at this time of the year, I wouldn't even care if UK was #1, I wouldn't even brag about it. Just keep talking though, I hope you realize that no matter how good UNC is this year and I'll even say that they will be good and make the tournament etc............., it must really suck to know that they have no chance of winning it all. There are only 4-5 teams that have enough to win it all and baby blue isn't one of them. Ans as far as time running out, you must be in denial. We're going to slam the ball down UNC's throat on Dec. 5, like Wall did to Stackhouse

    # 55 Time has already ran out for you and UK! How can u think Kentucky is the all out favorite? Publications, coaches and AP poll say Kansas is the clear cut favorite. When will Coach Cal get a school and stay there. UMASS, Memphis and now UK? Whoa! look at all the other coaches who stay at their schools for years and win titles. Coach williams is a UNC graduate, native of NC and assoc. coach for 10 years at Carolina before going to Kansas. All he did was come back home!! Uk yall got beat by UNC last year on national television. Ask Dickey V? Awesome baabbbbby!!!!!! UNC doing it again!!!!

#52 exactly, the numbers don't lie, don't get all selective with memory if you are going to bring up the past. Why are you posting on a story about UK, you can tell you're just a negative little girl talkin S***, I'll never post on any other story about another team because I don't start S*** like you do. You say get a life, you're talking about UK remember, you're not a fan of UK, so stop runnin your mouth and go post something positive about your team, keep'em coming JamesA, I like it when you stick your foot in your mouth, and while you say we haven't done anything in recent years, other than UCLA with the titles, nobody has passed us in wins or titles, you had your chance to pass us don't get mad because your time ran out.

    # 37,39,47 and 51. Its clear and evident that all u have passion for UK! The numbers dont lie! That school has not been competitive in recent memory. In the past 10 years ACC 4 national titles (Duke, Maryland and 2 for UNC). SEC 2 national titles (Florida back to back), Big East 3 national titles ( 2 UConn and Syracuse). Big 12 (kansas). Lets not talk about the lack of even making it to the Sweet 16 or elite 8! UCLA and Michigan ST have dominated that dicussion of frequent flyer miles to the final four. UK has not done anything!!! Louisville has out done yall for the past several years and clearly out play yall!! Uk cant even contend with Gonzaga, Wisconsin or Davidson on post tournament play in the past few years. Uk is a joke!!! I hope yall do well. Saying that Coach Cal is paid more than Coach Williams, Self, K, Calhoun,Pitino,Howell, Boeheim and Izzo is straight trash!! Those coaches contend very year no matter who they got on there roster!!! Uk is living in the past and havent done nothing in the present. Get a life!!!

Roger V(iagra) Do you really expect anyone to answer your ignorant questions? ok numnutz when you dump on a team's coach that was your team's coach it shows your bitterness and yes jealousy. The recruits who wanted to play for him went with him so therefore you respond with your pi$$y attitude and demeaning comments. Therefore that coach's supporters respond to your infantile and poorly thoughtout remarks.Your comments might carry more weight if you knew how to communicate clearly. Half of the time your word choice and spelling is so attrocioius it hurts to read your posts.
You don't even support you own team. You are not a fan. You are just a jack a$$ who can only get his jollies knocking others. Hence the "V" standing for viagra.

When people blog here and state their disdain for Calamari why is it called "hating" on UK ..Or jealous of UK ? What is truly to be jealous of? Are all of the other elite progams jealous because their school didnt stoop to the low that UK did in hiring such an immoral egocentric recruiter?

As a Kentucky fan...I just wanted to say Im so happy that the Kansas and North Carolina fans are coming over and reading about Kentucky......honestly.....I could give a crap less about your schools...you wont find me reading about your teams...because I really dont care...But...the reason your reading about Kentucky is for the fact ...YOUR WORRIED.....you see...the power is back...more titles to be hung in Rupp soon. Your schools had their chances while Kentucky was regaining itself....Its all over now...your runs are through...so sit back....shake your heads....cuss Kentucky....because.....THE BIG BLUE POWER ROLLER IS BACK...Steaming though Lawerence of Arabia Kansas and Chappel mole hill North Carolina. So come on over ....write what you have to write....because the real reason your here is ....YOUR CONCERNED....AND YOU SHOULD BE!
