Kentucky’s Calipari high on prized recruits

  • Print

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)—New Kentucky coach John Calipari says the Wildcats could open his first season with three freshman starters.

That doesn’t mean he’s downplaying the high expectations. Those three came from the nation’s top recruiting class and include point guard John Wall.

At the Southeastern Conference media day Thursday, Calipari says Wall is ahead of former Memphis and current NBA players Tyreke Evans and Derrick Rose at this stage.

The Wildcats also have preseason SEC player of the year Patrick Patterson.

Calipari predicted the SEC would have seven or eight teams in the NCAA tournament after only three teams made it last year.

well if UK gets a fair shake from the referees ,they can beat UNC, it seems when they play UNC ,they get screwed by the officials, Ive been a UK fan since the late 50's .had some great teams, Rupps Runts led by pat Riley won the NCAA championship.

kevin b, I think KY fully vetted Cal, understood what they were bringing in and Cal too knows the history at KY. Now, we have a coach everyone wants to play for, and a school that everyone would love to go to. Great marriage!!! Go Cats, and have a beer Kevin and sit back and watch.

Geoffrey....Appreciate your comments...I am a #1 Ky fan, but a great fan of college basketball...Coach Cal's past sorta scares me, but it is all together possible he is 100 percent innocent...I hope so and am happy to have his talents here to raise Ky back to the top level....GO CATS!!!!!!!

Although Calipari does seem to be getting a lot of one-and-done kids, he still brought them to that Championship game. Sure Derrick Rose was only there for one year, and although it may seem like he's not building a "good" program, he is getting where the school wants to be come March. If he keeps producing results such as tournament appearances and Final Fours, he will always receive praise. Now that he is in a different conference, it will be very interesting to see how the up-tempo offense goes.

James, I wonder if Billy Donovan agrees with you about that. Pitino is much more than someone who just uses kids. Pitino inspires and works with people. He truly cares and for that matter so does John Calipari. I am positive not one person on here who says these things has spent even thirty seconds in the presence of these men. If you have not been able to talk to and spend time with someone what right do you have to make a character assessment of them. How would that same character assessment look like if done on you using only a couple of some of your not so good moments in your life? I know mine would look terrible. Men of character aren't mistake free...they are men who move forward after learning and growing from their mistakes and the adversity that is the result of them.

JH.....Do you think anyone has ever tried to help SHAQ with his free throw shooting????As far as signing the 1 and done players, that is the key to staying on top now....That is what college basketball has evolved into....It is not the same game Rupp coached 50 years ago....Roll with the changes and enjoy the greatest game existing....look for the positives...

To be considered a good/great coach, in college at least, you have to be able to recruit. None of the top coaches are terrible recruiters or don't have someone who can handle the recruiting for them. To say that John Calipari is a snake oil salesman or any of the other degrading adjectives that are used to describe him is in my opinion just not true. Calipari won at UMass, he won at Memphis, and he won big at these schools...schools who only had a program because he was there. I think its ignorant to say he's not a good coach, just because he makes a couple of noticeable if not arguable mistakes. It is easy to sit back and spread hate and talk about people we don't know or like simply because they are successful. Calipari is a winner and will continue to win, especially with the strength and backing of a program that is as prestigious as Kentucky's is. I'm not a Kentucky fan, just a college basketball fan, and I'm so tired of hearing people bash Calipari and use things that haven't even been proven to be linked to him. If they were true there is no way he would still hold the position he holds. I understand that some things don't look good that he has been involved with, but make sure that you evaluate other coaches and the classes their players take and the SAT scores they have before you use those things to label Calipari a cheater. Do some real research, don't just hear things and turn them into your opinion and expect that it should be viewed as truth...the truth is Calipari will always have talent at Kentucky. Even if he didn't know how to call a play, you could make the case that makes him a good coach...its part of what a good coach has to be able to do in college.

Seems everywhere Cal has been, trouble has always followed him. He doesnt care about the university, only their money. He doesnt care about building a team for the future since he signs many 1 and done players. Im so grateful UNC has a coach who not only loves his university, but cares so deeply for all his players. Im also looking forward to the game vs uk in Dec. I wonder if Cal went to a clinic to be able to teach his players to shoot free throws since thats what sunk their ship against Kansas 2 yrs ago

Ky will be a revolving door of talent every year Cal is coach... We will be in the top -5- every year on recruits...The very best recruits wont sign until late when they can evaluate if they for sure can start next year....A top point guard is not going to sign with Ky unless he is sure Wall is entering the draft...We very well may have seen the last 4 year starter at Ky....Every year, Lexington will have one of the most talented teams in the nation.....Championships will be decided by Cal's ability to blend big ego's into a TEAM !!!!!!

how anyone can say he doesn't have a recruiting class for 2010 is beyond me. It would be absolutely foolish for top players to commit this early when they are being entertained by some of the top programs in the country. There are just too many top players who like Cal and want to play for him for anyone to say something as stupid as he won't have a class next year. Just wait til the end of spring and see how Cal fared in recruiting... next year's class won't be much different, more one-and-done players to replace current one-and-done players.

It will take a lot of blending for this team to win the National Championship, but this Ky team appears to have more talent than Kansas or Michigan State to me..(of course I am a biased UK fan)..No one can predict if this team will mesh...I believe Wall and Bledsoe will start at guards, Miller will be the "3" and Patterson/ Cousins will play the 4-5 spots....Liggins-Orton will get most bench minutes....If not, look for Liggins to transfer....Did anyone else think of Bradley while watching Bledsoe??? He is faster, but it seemed to me like he pressed to impress...This is a very deep, talented team.....Chemistry will decide how far it will go....Patterson being the consumate team player will help much....

WOW. You guys are a bunch of haters. As a UK fan I love all the smack you guys throw around to try and cover your inadequate teams. One person states that they have no recruiting class .... YET! Get real. He has the best recruiting class in the nation. Have you been asleep since he was hired. My only concern in the one-and-done issue that the NBA has inflicted on the NCAA. UK could lose 4 players to the draft this next year. Then you all can start talking about UK's fall from grace. I think that the UNC game will be close because of when it is scheduled. However, March is a long way away. UK already has bought their shoes and is ready for the big dance!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its been some time since UK has been considered a contender. I think the fact that they are talked about so heavily is exciting for the fans, and it should be. I hope for a good season but I hope more for long term success, a return to the top of the ranks each year.

He doesnt have much of a recruiting class...YET. If you look at the preferences for most of the top players, a lot of them have Kentucky at the top of their list. It is just a matter of time.
