Defending champion Tar Heels kick off season

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP)—North Carolina lost a lot of talent from the team that won last season’s national championship, from a four-year star who was the program’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder to a couple of underclassmen-turned-NBA rookies.

Then again, that might just mean more playing time for John Henson.

The gangly, 6-foot-10 freshman scored 10 points in the intrasquad scrimmage during the Tar Heels’ annual “Late Night with Roy” event to kick off the season Friday night, a glimpse of the talent that could make him a huge matchup problem for teams already grappling with North Carolina’s talented front line.

“That size and athleticism is just one of those things that’s tough to describe,” fifth-year senior Marcus Ginyard said of Henson. “He’s a guy who can do some interesting things out there. We’ve got to let it play out and see what he does, but there’s no question he can be a big help to the team.”

Henson’s performance highlighted the night’s festivities, which drew about 19,000 fans for a show that included team skits, music and dancing. It was the start of the program’s centennial basketball season and the debut of this year’s squad, which includes freshmen David and Travis Wear—the first twins to play for the Tar Heels—and marks the first time in seemingly forever that Tyler Hansbrough wasn’t around the Smith Center.

Hansbrough ended his career with the national championship he always wanted, graduating with fellow seniors Danny Green and Bobby Frasor. In addition, Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington both headed to the NBA after their junior seasons, leaving behind a team with a deep front line and question marks in the backcourt.

While senior Deon Thompson, and sophomores Ed Davis and Tyler Zeller figure to take the lead role in the Tar Heels’ title defense, Henson could be a weapon that makes North Carolina even tougher to defend, particularly if he ends up as the team’s 3-man.

Henson drove to the basket for a layup on the first play for the White team, then followed with a dunk on the next possession. He swatted a reverse layup attempt from fellow freshman Dexter Strickland, displaying the shot-altering long arms that Zeller described as “Go-Go Gadget arms” during the team’s media day Thursday.

Henson looked comfortable moving on the perimeter or playing inside, though his lean frame barely looks like it weighs the 195 pounds listed on the roster.

“That was actually one of the guys I really didn’t like to guard this summer playing pickup,” Ginyard said. “He’s just so tough to defend. You take away his inside game and push him to the outside, he’s very comfortable on the perimeter. You force him inside, he’s got that size advantage over you.”

Junior Will Graves—who was suspended at midseason last season—led Blue with 12 points and hit three 3-pointers, displaying the long-range shooting that will be needed with the departures of Lawson, Ellington and Green. Sophomore Larry Drew II, who is expected to take over Lawson’s duties at the point, had some good moments, including when he spun by defender Marc Campbell and hit a hanging layup over the 6-10 David Wear despite getting fouled.

But he ended the scrimmage by losing the ball while trying to split two defenders in the final seconds, sealing Blue’s 36-34 victory.

I am not seeing to many comments here about the multi-talented Ed Davis. Don't forget he is a top 3 NBA pick right now and will come into his own this year; look out defenses. Ed is the real deal that has natural instints to go with his big time talent. Deon will not be the go-to-guy; that will be Ed Davis on the interior. Ed must say out of foul trouble this year for the Heels to be legit. Also, they will need some consistant point guard play and Graves must come up big from the peremeter. It is hard to expect to much from freshman but I think the Henson kid could do some good things. Yes, the championship is a stretch; the final 8 is what I woud call realistic. Go Heels!

don't forget Ty Zeller, who along with those you mentioned will also have higher draft stock value than Deon.

You need a well-rounded team to make it all the way. UNC does not have a solid Point Guard or Shooting guard. I am a Tarheel fan through and through, but I dont think we will win a NCAA championship this year. Who is our go to guy, Thompson--lol, yeah right, the Wear twins, I dont think so. Drew will turn the ball over too much for us and Ginyard can play the 2, but he aint that great at it. GO HEELS, they will lose about 5 games. Sad thing, i have lower level seats to all home games.

I like the heels chances of making to the elite 8, possibly the final four but repeating is a stretch, we all seen the talent it takes to win a championship, each Tarheel championship team has had 3 or more players leave for the NBA the following year, I don't see but 1possible NBA player on that team right now and thats Thompson, will have to go out and play every night, play with passion and attitude, he's got the talent, he just has to live upto it, come Jan, I will see & know if my Heels can repeate but its a little too early to be talking repeat now! But nonetheless the Heels should remain King of the ACC,

garyg r u serious 25 must be sick yea we lost alot but experience counts in college more than talent. look how the "mid-majors" end up beating a team with all high school all-americans it's because that team has mostly have some juniors and seniors and explosive underclassmen which we have. we will win more than 25 do to the frontcourt height alone.it's no "rebuilding" reload is what we do. Dook needs to rebuild that's y he's changing up to compete but the only athlete they had wuz the ones that left.

I graduated from Carolina, was on a varsity team, and bleed Carolina Blue just as much, if not more, than the next Carolina fan. But I think everybody needs to slow down here. Are these Heels gonna be good? Absolutely. Do they have some tests ahead of them. Again, absolutely.

That large (no pun intended) stable of frontcourt players is arguably the best in the nation in terms of depth. But you need a suitable backcourt in order to GET THEM THE BALL. Is Drew ready? I hope so. We've all read that he had a big-time summer and realizes he's the man this year. But I grimaced through more than a few of his possesions last year that didnt end so swell.

I'm just excited again. Last year was GREAT, but it was also kinda filled with pressure b/c they always HAD to win (or else I was going to shoot someone, possibly myself). Much like 2006, this will be fun to be a fan again and not KNOW the outcome before the game starts. This upcoming season it will actually be concievable for them to lose, whereas 2009 it was just not a possibility (or atleast not one I was willing to host in my delusional mind).

Before we all start talking about repeating and s-u-c-k-i-n-g each other's d-i-c-k-s, take a step back and enjoy 2009 still. We'll be in it towards the end; never you worry.

    I'm a TarHeel born, I'm a TarHeel bred, and when I die I'm a TarHeel dead.

Amazing how Deon at 6'8" is only the sixth-tallest on the team. This will be a rebuilding season for Carolina standards. They probably won't win more than 25 games, IMO.

Heel's always seem to find the talent. Back court will be fine, all they have to do is feed the front court. Tar Heels should repeat, but every team they play will be gunning for them. If they can find the 3 point shooters, it could be a special year.

Tarheels will be great! Or as good as some of the other Carolina teams in the past 10 years. They will be a winning record holding team and highly noticed when they play at home, away, preseason, or in any tournament. Watch out for the HEELS!!!!

I attended late night with roy at UNC Friday night for the 5th straight year and as usual had a blast. With Carolina having the biggest front line in the nation, if the perimeter guys can hold their own, the Heels will be back in the mix to defend their national title. I could single out alot of guys who I think will be a force but having Coach Roy Williams at the helm is all that needs to be said. GO TAR HEELS!!!!!!!
