Thomas says he’s ‘hurt’ over Magic’s book comments

  • Print

MIAMI (AP)—Hall of Fame players Isiah Thomas and Magic Johnson famously kissed each other’s cheek moments before tip-off of Game 1 of the 1988 NBA finals.

Today, the relationship clearly isn’t anywhere near as close.

In Thomas’ mind, a 17-year-old wound has been reopened in a new book that Johnson and Larry Bird wrote with author Jackie MacMullan. In the book, Johnson says, among other things, that he played a role in keeping Thomas off the 1992 U.S. Olympic team.

“I’m just disappointed and hurt,” Thomas told The Associated Press on Thursday night before a promotional event for his men’s basketball team at FIU. “I never thought it was him who kept me off the Olympic team. That hurt.”

Thomas’ disappointment with aspects of the book were first reported by SI.com.

In the book, which chronicles the careers of Bird and Johnson, the former Los Angeles Lakers great who retired from basketball in 1991 after being diagnosed with HIV said Thomas questioned his sexuality and that several players did not want him on the original “Dream Team” that easily won Olympic gold.

“Isiah killed his own chances when it came to the Olympics,” Johnson said in the book, an advance copy of which was obtained by The AP. “Nobody on that team wanted to play with him. … I’m sad for Isiah. He has alienated so many people in his life, and he still doesn’t get it. He doesn’t understand why he wasn’t chosen for that Olympic team and that’s really too bad. You should be aware when you’ve ticked off more than half of the NBA.”

Thomas said he declined a chance to be interviewed for the book. According to its index, he appears on at least 26 pages.

“I wish he would have called me,” Thomas said. “I always believed that our friendship was good and close enough that we wouldn’t have to talk about this stuff in such a public venue.”

When Thomas was not on that 1992 Olympic roster, there was widespread speculation that Michael Jordan tried to keep the Detroit Pistons guard off the team. Jordan denied those claims, Thomas said he took the Bulls star at his word, and tried to get past the slight.

“I rooted for the USA because I wanted them to win,” Thomas said. “You move on. But that was a big hole in the resume. It hurts me that he’s taking credit for it.”

Thomas also denied questioning Johnson’s sexuality.

In the book, Johnson said the failed relationship with Thomas is “the biggest personal disappointment of my life … nothing else is even close.”

One passage has Johnson discussing how he called the guest quarters of his Southern California home “the Isiah Room,” noting that he would leave house keys for Thomas at the hotel when the Pistons came to Los Angeles.

“He was like my brother,” Johnson said.

The comments by Johnson are the latest salvo in a strained relationship, once made famous by the pre-finals kiss and a pair of crowd-pleasing 1-on-1 battles in the final moments of the 1992 NBA All-Star game. But even during those 1988 finals, Johnson and Thomas let their competitive sides boil over, jostling with each other after physical play later in the series.

In Johnson’s words, he and Thomas are now “cordial. That’s about it.”

Last fall, Johnson said he would not recommend Thomas for any other NBA jobs, after Thomas’ stints with both the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks were rocky at times—particularly so in New York. Johnson said he “separated the personal from the professional” when telling Knicks officials that they should consider Thomas to coach their team.

The book, “When the Game Was Ours,” is to be officially released Nov. 4.

    MAGIC JOHNSON GAY?
It's funny that the 'homophobic' Tim Hardaway popped Magic's devout team mate, AC Green, in the head with a couple of elbows and got tossed the first game after Green said he didn't support Magic being allowed back into the NBA (Timmy also gave up his only starting all-star spot of his career to Magic in that '92 game)... Magic's sexuality may have been questioned, but Timmy had his back...

Two arrogant, self-entered, narcissistic, "me first" losers Both of them. Money can't buy you respect which is why when it's all said and done they'll both die bitter old men. Pathetic individuals in so many ways. F both of them as far as I'm concerned. They both helped ruin the NBA in turning it into a jive sport with no scruples - only bling, women and money.

Magic was blatantly outright wrong for saying what he said, if he and Zeke was such good friends he would have discuss it with him and let the book sell by he and Bird's name. But here again with that cheesey grin he got suckered into doin' something that benefit him on the expense of someone he supposedly care about! I don't think people get it when they say word "friend", I know Magic don't get it, because he did it to one his best friends, His WIFE............!

I have to question people's knowledge of the game when they can't even spell a Top 50 player of all time's name right. It's spelled with a "K," people! It's Karl Malone, not Carl Malone! That's all...it's just a blog, but come on...it's someone's name! OK, now I'm done.

Who cares if Isiah was "hurt"..when did Isiah ever care about other people's feelings..With his little sneaky smirk he used to always have on his face when you got away with a flagrant back in the "Badboy" days. You know your a jerk when Larry Bird, Jordan, and Karl Malone all agree that you were not wanted...Granted I agree that Laettner and Mullin was a streach to be on the team, I think Dominic Wilkins was robbed of a spot not Isiah...

That's right, Carl Malone publicly stated that he didn't want to play with Magic and nobody know if Isiah said anything or not. He didn't say anything about Carl Malone because Carl Malone is a nobody and he couldn't help with the sale of the book. Isiah is being used to sell books and some people are jealious of him because he was a little guy that made a lie out of people that said a little guy couldn't make a difference. Cartwright is a coward too. 7'6 against 6'0 please. The ref was never fair to Zeke either and he still won.

Uhhh.....not that this has any bearing on the debate regarding Johnson's claims, but this book is already in stores. I work for Borders and it was released earlier this month. This article claims it is officially released Nov. 4th. We have had the book in our store for at least 2 weeks. Something is messed up there. I even double checked with our store manager today about the release date to be sure that we weren't wrong. I think the author of this article has some faulty info.

For all who try to belittle Magic saying he should be grateful to be alive or that he is living on borrowed time. Stop and think for one minute. We should all be grateful to be alive, and we are all living on borrowed time. You can drop dead this instant, and it wouldn't have to be from HIV.

Look, Thomas showed everybody back in the 80's that he has issues, after his comments about
how if Larry Bird was black he would be just another player in the NBA .I realized then this guy has
some racial issues that clearly he has not worked out then and probably still today. It was well
known that he was a "me first ,the team second" kind of a guy when he was at Indiana and it seemed
to continue during his great NBA career. Although I admire his basketball skills, his people skills
are obviously his shortcoming. One only needs to look at his NBA coaching problems of recent years
by showing the apparent lack of respect given by former NBA players ( magic, jordan, etc.) that continued with even todays players. These shortcomings are magnified even more so with his
attempt to coach a NBA team.A good coach must be a good communicator, and has good overall people skills, that results in respect amoung players and peers ,something Mr Thomas largely lacks apparently .

Doesn't he have some medication to take.
Probably has to find a way to pay for it.... get somebody to write a book for me
then stir up some old controversy with it so he can pay for his pills.

Isiah was not good in Toronto or New York but he was great in Detroit as a player and good as a coach in Indy. You don't have to give him anything extra but be honest. There are a lot of players that would love to trade places with him.

Good point Vilgar about the marketing and publicity theory....but I don't agree. I seriously doubt that's what's happing here. I like to view it as KHARMA.......what goes around -comes around.

Isiah transformed the Pacers from prime rib to hamburger in a few years, absolutely sucked as Toronto's GM (spent too much time looking for a PG in his own image), and I'm still trying to figure out what the Knicks were thinking.
