Binghamton halts off-campus basketball recruiting

  • Print

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP)—Binghamton University officials say off-campus recruiting for the men’s basketball teams has been suspended.

Interim Athletic Director James Norris says coach Kevin Broadus won’t be allowed to go on any recruiting trips until next month. The decision comes after Friday’s announcement that Broadus admitted having contact with prospective recruits that violated NCAA regulations.

Norris said Sunday that all future recruiting trips by the basketball program must be approved by the athletic department.

Broadus’ admission was another blow to the college’s athletic program, which is under review following last month’s dismissal of six basketball players, including star player Emanuel “Tiki” Mayben.

Mayben was arrested on drug charges last month. He has pleaded not guilty.

I'd say about half the time when these violations come up, I wind up extremely suspicious of the NCAA. I've said many times before, I don't trust them as far as I can walk without my crutches (about 10'). I think they make it up as they go and are exceedingly inconsistent when it comes to punishments. The NCAA is famous for applauding schools for self regulating, finding violations and imposing penalties, then when the applause dies down, they body slam many schools above and beyond any reason, just to say they can. But in this case, I gotta say, they're right on time.

My son and daughter both attended SUNY Binghamtom. Great school!! The jewel in the SUNY system.

A new gym is built and aspirations to become a basketball power grow. Coach Walker was at the reins, a good coach with great basketball IQ, but he couldn't deliver. They were a losing team with a losing program that suddenly becomes good . They win 27 games and reach the NCAA tournament. No one seemed to care that it happened so quickly.

...now this crap happens and the program will go to pieces. Sad and Sahmeful!! But that's what happens.... when you lay down with dogs don't expect to not get fleas. Hopefully student athletes will still be attracted to attend on the strength of a great education and top notch facilities. It will take years to become good again.

It is unfortunate that these things happen. Then again students who don't play D-I sports also do these things but don't make the news. That aside, GO VERMONT. It is safe to say SUNY-B is no longer the pre-season favorite in the American East. The losses of Reggie Fuller and Dwayne Jackson would have been tolerable with the returns of Rivera, Mayben and Alvin but the loss of all 5 means 64.9 points, 27.4 rebounds and 11.1 assists will not be returning. M.B. at Vermont will be the AEC Player of the Year. Vermont only needs to replace Colin McIntosh and Mike Trimboli, tough losses but not as bad as SUNY-B.

OK maybe BU can make a move but as long as Vermont has M.B. they are in the driver's seat.

Oh David Fine's stats from last season? 0.9 points, 0.1 rebounds and 0.2 assists.

Chandler and Crosby did not play at SUNY-B last season.

The coach has to go among others. He didn't recruit all the players but enought of them. A lot of them were high risk, players other programs wouldn't go near. Not a few , a lot. There's a Nyt article stating this. The Serbian guy was recruited by the previous coach. The AD and the president also should have been more aware.

Don't have a lot of evidence to back this up but this is what I heard from someone inside the binghamton athletic department.

The five players released from the team were kicked off because of an incident related to the use of a stolen/lost credit card. What I heard was that one of the players came in possession of a credit card belonging to another individual who did not realize it was missing. The basketball players then tried to use the credit card to pay for a variety of things.

Again this is just a rumor and I have no way to verify this information.

you recruit these kids for basketball talent supposibly considering the whole person:well we all come with baggage and us educated adults should aid the kid in getting rid of unnecessary baggage. So you just sent them back to the place were they picked up the baggage and i pray they find some caring Adult who sees the potential of these kids and helps them remove the bad baggage!

I know very little about this situation, but I applaud a coach who has the nerve to dismiss someone from a team because they don't like the rules or the decisions regarding discipline., Playing basketball or any other sport in college is not a right, it is a PRIVILEGE and if you don't behave properly, in every aspect of your life, you should be kicked off the team. Pure and simple.

Walker brought in Kovacevic... but ya, bring him back [sarcasm]. When do open tryouts start? I wanna work on my jump shot & i should have eligibility left.

This team did bring us the only good story from Binghamton, NY this year by making the NCAA tournament for the 1st time. It doesn't offset all the negatives from here this year, though.

So thanks for the great season last year and don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

Too bad he didn't go to Memphis or Kentucky where he would be making as much money as he needed.
I wonder how many players have been kept away from drug arrests because of the 'help' from these great schools!
