Davis leads UC Irvine over Vanguard 75-73

IRVINE, Calif. (AP)—Will Davis II had 17 points and 13 rebounds as UC Irvine held off Vanguard 75-73 on Saturday night.

Davis, a freshman, had a tip-in to give the Anteaters a 72-70 lead with 49 seconds remaining and a key block with 32 seconds to play. UC Irvine (2-6) added three free throws in the final 16 seconds, enabling them to withstand a 3-pointer by Vanguard’s Taylor Kelly.

Kelly had 18 points and made six 3-pointers for the Lions, an NAIA squad that classified the game as an exhibition. Vanguard, which remained 6-4, is located in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Michael Wilder and Daman Starring added 16 points each for UC Irvine.
