HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP)—Gilberto Clavell had 16 points and eight rebounds as Sam Houston State defeated St. Thomas, Texas, 54-46 Wednesday night.

Josten Crow added 13 points and six steals for the Bearkats (4-1), who shot just 31 percent from the field but took advantage of 25 turnovers by the Celts.

Jeremy Lewis had 14 points and Anthony Medina 11 for St. Thomas (3-7), an NAIA school.

Sam Houston led by as many 16 points in the second half but could not put away St. Thomas. The Celts cut the lead to 45-37 with 2:50 to play and to 53-46 with 37 seconds left.

The Bearkats had a big advantage at the free-throw line, hitting 20 of 31 attempts compared to 9 of 13 for St. Thomas.
